Thanks to Robert Frey, former nightclub owner in Las Vegas, the Big Apple is getting its own cannabis museum next winter.
The businessman reportedly signed a 10-year lease on a historic SoHo building at 427 Broadway and Howard Street that he plans to convert into a 30,000-square-foot marijuana museum called The House of Cannabis, The Real Deal reported .
The museum’s exhibit will include marijuana-related artwork and artifacts.
“We’re just excited because New Yorkers are real cannabis enthusiasts,” said Frey, who is backed by cannabis venture capital firm Merida Capital Holdings. “We thought it would be a great place to present our museum exhibition. We want it to be a lighthouse of sorts for people to learn about cannabis.”
For now, Frey plans to convert the building’s three floors into a gallery that will tell the story of marijuana and feature weed-inspired artwork.
“We wanted to bring a lot of topics together under one roof and put it in an environment where people can really explore, educate themselves and understand what cannabis is all about and the impact it’s having on New York,” said Frey, who also attended Clubs like the Pussycat Dolls Lounge and Pure Nightclub in Las Vegas have contributed to the creation of the star.
The new cultural institution, also called THCNYC, will also feature LED light shows, sound engineering and digital journeys, he added.

Frey emphasized that the museum will not sell cannabis. “We really want to help all pharmacies, whether they want to use us to launch brands or however they see that we can help their programs.”
Meanwhile, the NY Office of Cannabis Management recently announced that it will be accepting applications for adult conditional retail distribution (CAURD) licenses beginning August 25, 2022. The application window ends on September 26, 2022.
