New York wants to be the cannabis capital of the world? What? Fuhgeddaboudit!
With New York Legalizing Cannabis rumored to be the new weed capital of the world – a title many cities will claim for themselves.
Why?
Because weed is big business, and depending on where you are, the market is owned either by licensed or unlicensed vendors.
For many years, “Cali Bud” has been the gold standard for marijuana around the world. This is because some weeds are growing in the emerald triangle!
The hippies of yore pioneered the diverse genetic pool available to us today, and before California officially legalized recreational marijuana – and regulated the market to death – it was the world’s leading seller of cannabis.
However, since California, as mentioned, legalized weed under Prop 64, it essentially took the recreational market out of that weird jurisdiction it was in.
The problem was that regulators taxed the purchase of weed so heavily that the illegal market subsequently boomed. People selling illegally chose to stay that way – creating cheaper, more accessible weed of exactly the same quality that is sold in pharmacies.
The police went after these weed root growers and sellers, essentially choking the market. The California model suffered and the world became aware of it.
More importantly – New York!
How Legalization Is Different from New York!
The New York system is reminiscent of the former California. Activists used the governor’s previous indiscretions against women to use their arguments. And it worked!
New York has managed to secure 50% of its licenses for marginalized communities. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of this idea and would much rather see a lower entry point in terms of cost than see a certain number of licenses being given to a few.
I’ve always said – get it cheap up to $ 1,000,000 in annual sales and beyond that, you can play with the “corporate price tag” on licenses. New York pharmacies will vary widely from Times Square to New York State.
But give everyone the chance to participate, regardless of whether they are black, white, gay or straight. Do it cheap, let those who know how to move the market, establish their brands, and help their communities.
Nonetheless, the fact that New York managed to offer some protection to the marginalized groups is a victory for those who fought for it – so well done!
More importantly, there will be a balance between large companies and grass roots farmers.
Also, the great thing about New York’s move was that consumer licenses were allowed from day one. This means that bars and clubs could apply for them and start making money from the lucrative industry from day one.
More importantly, cannabis users are not treated like socially lepers who are forced to use at home because public use is illegal.
If you can drink in a bar you should also be able to speak a cannabis language. Otherwise the idea of adult legalization is really misguided.
Nonetheless, New York seems to have thought of that, learned from California how to not legalize, and now has a pretty solid system in place for success.
We’ll have to see how the market develops, but New York is a lot of money and since the laws are a little lax it could very well become the weed capital of the world.
Unless there’s one thing California has that New York doesn’t – a longer growing season!
Longer season means bigger harvests
New York will be forced to import more grass than it can grow because, unlike places like Southern California – where it never snows, New York can be covered in snow for months.
That means they essentially have a big harvest season and of course – some people will grow indoors year round, but that adds to the cost of production.
In California, not only do they have a longer growing season, they also share a border with Mexico – where cheaper grass will be available for import.
Not to mention that California is twice the size of New York, so in purely numerical terms – they have an advantage.
Of course, they are currently grappling with one of the worst models of legalization on earth – but how long do you think it will take? At what point will consumers unite behind a new pillar that will completely redefine the system?
What if Mexico can easily supply the highest quality cannabis – grown to US standards? The price of weed goes down, the volume goes up, and suddenly the cheaper high quality buds are creating a massive influx of cannabis tourism.
Both cities have tourism as a strong selling point.
The sticky end result
The battle for the title “Weed Capital of the World” has become bitter over the years. There are many metrics that need to be considered in order to grow the best cannabis city in the world.
Remember, Mexico is a sleeping giant and if politicians could ever figure out the framework for legalization, they could become the world’s weed supplier.
After all, thanks to anti-drug propaganda, they already have strong branding when it comes to “marijuana”. With plenty of high profile politicians, business people and activists gathering, Mexico City could even become the weed capital of the world.
Who knows!
Personally, I would like to see strong competition all over the world – Cape Town – Grass Capital of the Year 2024! Stoners like me would then have only one more reason to travel to exotic places and smoke exotic herbs!
What do you think is the weed capital of the world?
