New York's two-and-a-half-year-old legal cannabis program is like a fueled rocket, just steaming on the launch pad, waiting to ignite.

The state's regulators have almost no ability to tamper with the ball, and stores are finally opening almost daily. There are about 2 million weed smokers in the New York City metropolitan area, but until now there were only a handful of retail stores. What are the weed rules in New York?

Weed is now legal for adults 21 and over. Police have stopped making arrests for possession. Smoking is not permitted in the parks, but current regulations state that smoking is permitted on the sidewalk.

You can have up to 3 ounces, 24 grams of hash and grow 6 plants.

What's new about legal weed in New York?

Update December 20: New York state regulators continue to issue licenses that promise to increase the number of retail stores in New York City in the coming year. More than 7,000 have applied recently.

AJ's Sour Diesel will be available in select stores throughout the winter as part of a deal with Flowerhouse. Follow Flowerhouse and Get Sour for the next drop.

Fresh indoor cannabis also comes to adult dispensaries. The state's existing indoor medical cannabis operators have just received permission to sell in stores. Look for new reviews of New York's first legal indoor weed in the coming weeks.

The THC Museum is open and open to visitors.

New York police and regulators are taking tough action against those who violate remaining criminal and civil laws against the unlicensed sale and distribution of cannabis. As a result, more than 1,000 outlets claim to sell THC, CBD and other cannabinoids. These products are not tested by New York State for purity or potency. Previous untested cannabis products in New York contained toxic vaping chemicals and other contaminants.
