- The Statue of Liberty was created in France and sent as a gift to the American people. It was constructed in 1886 by the French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and shipped across the Atlantic in 350 individual parts. In total, assembly took four months.
- In 1904, the New York Times Newspaper moved its headquarters to Longacre Square. Today the area is commonly referred to as Times Square.
- The Empire State Building is struck by lightning at least 23 times each year.
- Built in 1869, the Brooklyn Bridge predates London’s Tower Bridge. It took fourteen years to build and twenty-one people died during construction.
- The New York City subway system is considered the largest in the world.

- The first pizza was made in 1905 in the heart of Little Italy. Born in Naples, Italy, Gennaro Lombardi founded Lombardi’s Pizza and is still serving pizza today.
- A number of mainstream dishes were originally created in NYC; Chicken and waffles, hot dogs, red velvet cake and Eggs Benedict are New York originals. Depending on your location, a hot dog street vendor license can cost up to two hundred thousand dollars a year.
- In the early 19th century, Manhattan was known for its oysters. Unfortunately, New York’s oyster beds have been destroyed due to pollution and overharvesting.

- The first Gay Pride March took place on June 28, 1970 in several cities in the United States. In NYC, the parade stretched fifty-one blocks to Central Park.
- The New York Public Library contains over fifty million books.
