South America New Year Traditions

New Year’s Eve is a very significant time in South America, both for the living and the dead. Traditions may vary by country, with the exception of colored underwear. Throughout South America and other Latin American countries, wearing colored underwear will keep you fit for the year ahead. If you want passion, wear red. Good luck? Wearing yellow.

In Chile, it is believed that the dead can come back and visit the living, but only at the New Year. A chance to see friends and family passed, everyone was celebrating in the cemetery.

In Peru, people have a unique way of letting go. During the Takanakuy festival, all grievances from the past year will be resolved … in a communal fistfight. It takes place on December 25th and participation is completely voluntary. Similar celebrations take place in Bolivia.

Great Britain and Scandinavia

In Denmark, lots of broken porcelain are the new popularity test. If you don’t have many friends, you can tell by the lack of broken dishes. Apparently, breaking a plate on a friend’s door brings him luck in the New Year.

What is the most efficient way to drive away bad luck and evil spirits? If the first answer that came to mind is slapping bread on the walls of your house, you must be from Ireland.

The possum

In North Carolina, this is known as the possum drop, and it happens at midnight. Since 1990, the people of Clay County have teamed up to gently lower a living possum. It started as a “redneck reaction” to the ball drop from NYC into Times Square. Unfortunately, the opossum drop ended in 2019. Animal rights activists argued that the animals should be left alone.
