Nevada: World Leader in Cannabis – Cannabis | weed | marijuana
Is Nevada the world leader in cannabis? Despite being handicapped by a federal government that has no right to criminalize cannabis, the Silver State is light years ahead of the competition.
They legalized medical cannabis back in 2001. Legalization for recreational use came in 2016.
Last week, Nevada Governor (Republican) Joe Lombardo passed a bill reforming the state’s cannabis laws.
The bill doubles the limit on cannabis possession and purchase. It also breaks the state’s arbitrary segregation policy that has prevented recreational pharmacies from selling to medical patients.
However, Senate Bill 277 is just the tip of the iceberg. Nevada is becoming the world leader in cannabis. European countries seeking legalization or Canada’s cannabis law review process could learn a lot from the Sagebrush State.
Nevada: World leader in cannabis
How is Nevada becoming a global cannabis leader?
As previously mentioned, Senate Bill 277 doubles the possession and purchase limits. Previously, Nevada residents were limited to one ounce of flower and eight concentrates. Residents can now purchase and own up to 2.5 ounces of flower and a quarter ounce of concentrates.
Bill 277 also removed Nevada’s ban on criminals operating in the cannabis industry.
However, if you commit a criminal offense and wish to start a cannabis business, the state licensing board may deny your application based on their definitions of “public health and safety.”
However, Nevada’s overhauls to its cannabis laws are a step in the right direction.
It’s a confirmation that Nevada can be a world leader in cannabis. While other states (and Canada) are talking about restricting cannabis markets and imposing more restrictions, Nevada went in the opposite direction.
Nevada: World leader in cannabis consumption lounges
Many public health officials are declaring cannabis consumption lounges unsafe due to the risk of driving disability (don’t they know that bars and restaurants serve alcohol?)
Not in Nevada, a world leader in cannabis.
Cannabis regulators in Nevada have given three existing dispensaries permission to open consumption lounges.
Legislators legalized consumption lounges two years ago, but these are the first three businesses to receive a permit.
Legalizing cannabis without permission from consumption lounges makes little sense. What to do if you live in an apartment without a balcony or have neighbors who are sensitive to smells?
There is no rational argument against cannabis consumption lounges when bars and restaurants serving alcohol are allowed.
Of course, many bureaucrats would probably like to restrict or even ban places where alcohol is served. You won’t find that in Nevada though. Even in the heyday of alcohol prohibition, local authorities barely enforced the law.
Nevada: The world’s first weed hotel
In March 2022, Elevations Hotels and Resorts purchased a $12 million property just off the Las Vegas Strip. The new owners of the 64-room non-gaming hotel installed air filters and said it was open to cannabis smokers.
If guests are at least 21 years of age, they may smoke anywhere on hotel property, including in their rooms.
Some are wondering if this hotel is legal. They do not sell cannabis, nor are they licensed to use cannabis.
The only open consumption lounge circumvents the rules by being on tribal land. The Lexi Hotel, on the other hand, does not advertise itself as a consumer lounge.
As one Nevada law firm told local news, “I think most people would argue that hotel rooms are public places that are open to the public to rent those rooms.”
Ergo, no laws are broken. Tobacco smoking is permitted in many casinos and hotel rooms in Las Vegas. And if cannabis is legal – what’s the difference?
Just another example of Nevada being the world leader in cannabis.
Nevada: World leader in cannabis
Of course, being a state within the Union prevents Nevada from being truly a world leader. And the US bans cannabis.
So, like other legal states, Nevada has a problem with cannabis banking.
Fortunately, states are passing laws that allow cannabis companies to deduct business expenses from their state revenues. Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey and New York were at the forefront here.
But not Nevada. Why?
Simply because there is no corporate tax in Nevada.
Nevada is not only a world leader in cannabis, but also in personal freedom. Not only do they not levy corporate income tax, but they also do not levy income tax. After all, a personal income tax is slavery with extra steps.
Unfortunately, they charge an excise tax on cannabis products. But it’s only 10%. Compare that to 15% in California. Or the absurd system in Canada, where the more efficiently you produce cannabis, the higher the excise tax you pay.
It’s clear that Nevada is fast becoming the global cannabis leader.
In many ways, Las Vegas, Nevada is a world leader in every field. Murray Rothbard once called it the pinnacle of civilization.
And he was right. What other state in America treats its adult residents like… well, adults?
