Santa Claus was a Koryak shaman
The Koryaks are the indigenous people of the Far East of Siberia. During the winter solstice, a Koryak shaman collected the hallucinogenic mushrooms Amanita Muscaria. The shaman put on red and white robes to honor the mushrooms and looked for them under the pines. On the eve of the winter solstice, they used mushrooms to go on a spiritual journey. It was believed that the mushrooms could solve all the problems in the village that were left over from the previous year. Ultimately, everything would be clean and a new beginning in the coming year would be possible. Who wouldn’t want that as a Christmas present?

Amanita Muscaria – A red and white mushroom
Amanita muscaria is the mushroom that inspired Christmas and grows from late summer to early winter. There are very few reports of human death, but Amanita muscaria is classified as toxic. Known for their hallucinogenic properties, these mushrooms also contain the natural stimulant ibotenic acid.
Ibotenic acid is known to increase adrenaline and increase physical strength and performance. What does that mean? Eating these mushrooms would literally make you jump around as fast and as far as possible, which gives them the common name of “flyworm or toadstool”. The uses of these mushrooms can be seen in traditions such as:
- Red and white Christmas colors
- Santa’s ability to fly around the world in one night
- Presents under a tree – Amanita muscaria typically grows under pine and birch trees
- Flying reindeer
Random Reindeer Facts – Reindeer are native to Siberia and love Amanita muscaria. In fact, it’s her favorite food. We’re not sure if the reindeer will get high, but their behavior is definitely suspicious. There were numerous reports of prancing, jumping, and frolicking.
At every winter solstice someone in the far north picked mushrooms colored in red and white. Eating the magic mushrooms would send them on a spiritual journey and they would be gifted with great knowledge. When their journey was over, they would share this newfound wisdom with the village; Giving people the opportunity to let go of their worries for a new year. Today Christmas has definitely evolved into something different, but this year it may be time to bring the tradition back. Psychedelic or just plain delicious, honor the spirit of the holidays and have some mushrooms.
