Municipal statutes make it difficult for cannabis shops to reach customers
Although cannabis is now legal in Canada, local regulations make it difficult for cannabis companies to reach customers.
Depending on where you live, there may not be cannabis stores near you. You may think it’s because your neighborhood just isn’t a popular place for new cannabis businesses. But there is actually a more likely reason for this. Many communities in Canada have statutes that prevent cannabis companies from opening.
For example, I live in Vancouver where it’s really easy to find cannabis stores. I can stop by a store just one block from my house to buy marijuana. But when I’ve gone to Surrey or Richmond, two nearby parishes, there are absolutely no stores. Both cities’ city councils have passed laws banning marijuana retail stores from opening.
So if you live in one of those places that have banned cannabis deals, you’ll either need to travel to a city without these statutes or get online delivery. And while delivery systems have improved a lot, there are still many logistical issues that the industry has yet to figure out.
Try to reach customers with applicable statutes
As much as these articles of association are an inconvenience to us buyers, they are an even greater obstacle to businesses. Without access to the core cities and suburbs, companies are missing out on many potential customers. While supplies exist, accessibility contributes more than anything to a company’s success. Many buyers choose not to buy when access proves inconvenient – or they buy from illegal sellers who are more conveniently located.
It is then in the best interests of the municipalities to allow cannabis companies to open up. Continued shop bans will only fuel the illegal market. It would be better to let new businesses in so that locals buy from reliable and trustworthy sources. Thankfully, it looks like more Canadian cities are planning to end these restrictive statutes. Back in June, West Vancouver passed new statutes that allow cannabis stores to be opened in certain locations.
