Montana’s best dispensaries for winter adventures

2022 is off to an exciting start in Big Sky Country. On January 1st, recreational marijuana sales began across Montana; and now—nearly two decades after the state first legalized medical marijuana—its superb cannabis can finally be enjoyed by all Montanans and visitors alike.

The Montana cannabis market offers a lot to explore. Thanks to an 18-month moratorium on new business licenses included in the state’s legalization framework law, almost every business in the state is actually based there and tends to emphasize small, high-value flowers and produce.

The introduction of the Rec Market has also opened the door to horizontal sales in Montana, meaning customers can finally buy flowers and other products from a different store than where they were made, making your Montana cannabis adventures even more fun become more comfortable and accessible.

Montana’s peak tourist season doesn’t begin until summer, but the quieter winter months are arguably an even better time to explore: From glorious snowy hikes to plentiful skiing, hot springs and more, Montana’s winters are best enjoyed with new people approved winters enjoy cannabis.

Below are some of our favorites – the must-haves to help you make the most of your cannabis-fueled winter adventures, along with some unique pot shops in Big Sky Country.

Juniper Cannabis Dispensary in Bozeman

Located in a Victorian home in booming downtown Bozeman, Juniper Cannabis sets a high bar for the Montana dispensary experience. The printed menus make navigating the store’s wares extremely straightforward…and much appreciated by this visually impaired writer.

Juniper’s product is as spot on as its shopping experience. I’ve fallen in love with the dense and superterpy Starkiller strain, as well as a hard-to-find CBD-dominant indica vape wagon; The latter is a great way to unwind without sinking too deep into the couch.

Bonus: Juniper carries Wander-friendly titanium bongs and unique Hobbit-style curved pipes from other Bozemanites Dangle supply.

Address: 120 N Grand Avenue, Bozeman

Gummy bears from High Road Edibles

Whether you’re looking for an energizing high to fuel up a day on the slopes, or a smooth cannabis après-ski for the hot springs or hot tub, low-dose edibles company High Road Edibles has you covered.

High Road gummies come in twenty-packs per can, each with 5 milligrams of THC, and come in killer flavor combinations created by co-founder and veteran Missoula chef Ben Miller: energizing lemon and strawberry, a blend of peach and green apple, and a deeply calming grapefruit & blood orange.

Solvent-free vape carts at Groove and Dancing Goat Gardens

Solvent-free extractions, which remove cannabis oils from the plant without the use of chemical solvents such as butane, CO2, or ethanol, have become a much-hyped part of Montana’s recreational market.

If you’re looking for a terpene-rich, solvent-free vape wagon, check out one of Missoula’s newest shops, Groove, an offshoot of Montana concert promoter Logjam Presents.

Like High Road Edibles, Groove uses the horizontal market and sells its carts across Montana. But if you’re in downtown Missoula, we recommend stopping by the cheerful showroom to see a wide range of vape wagons, including house specialties like the lively North Shore Maui and the calming Pakistani Chitral Kush.

We’re also fans of Dancing Goat Gardens’ solvent-free vape carts in collaboration with in-house brand Glacier Solventless. Just like Groove’s handcarts, they’re great for outdoor adventures and pack one hell of a punch. My favorite is the decadent Ice Cream Cake.

Tip: If you’re leaving Missoula to enjoy the serene beauty of Seeley Lake, visit the Dancing Goat satellite store there.

Located right on the edge of downtown, with ample parking, Spark1 is an easy and affordable stop before heading out on your adventures.

The company plans to expand into the wholesale market, so keep an eye out for its products across Montana in the coming months.

Montana Canna and Big Mountain Botanicals

There’s so much to love in the northwest corner of Montana in winter: staring at the glassy surface of Flathead Lake, skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort, luxuriating in the sparkling waters of Quinn’s Hot Springs. And what do these happy activities have in common? They all go extremely well with buds from one of Montana’s best kept cannabis secrets, Montana Canna.

Located a few miles outside of downtown Kalispell, the team at Montana Canna, led by owner Zachary Block, produces some of the most consistent and exciting strains. While we can’t get enough of classics like LA Kush Cake and Sundae Float, rarer strains like Mellowz and Violet Fog are just as exciting.

If you’re in the area, you’ll find Big Mountain Botanicals in Columbia Falls. The flower is on point, the infused honey is top notch, and the 100 milligram CBD gummies are my favorite CBD product made in the state.

Burn in Butte

Driving between Missoula and Bozeman? Why not time your bathroom break with a stop at the busy Burn Pharmacy, located in a mall in the storied mining town of Butte.

Burn only offers about a dozen strains and goes all in with loud, beautiful buds. The Sherb Cake is one of the most euphoric strains I’ve ever smoked, and the Tropical Cherries is a terpene hunter’s dream.

Betty’s Roadside Provisions and Greener Pastures in Big Sky

Big Sky Resort is one of the most popular places to ski in Montana. Luckily, there’s top-quality cannabis nearby. Check out Betty’s Roadside Provisions, featuring products from expert breeders Double Dogs and their partner, iconic brand Cookies. The Cheetah Piss in particular is an excellent hybrid for skiers.

We’re big fans of Greener Pastures too – their indica-like Chili Verde is a fragrant treat.

Greener Pastures Address: 120 Big Pine Dr #5, Big Sky
