Mitch McConnell was a hindrance to marijuana

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has made a name for himself as a tough, determined, and political muscleman. He has disputed presidents along with the Senate and House of Representatives. He has a vision and focuses on it no matter who stands in his way – political opponents, the President and even the general public. He’s a legend and Mitch McConnell was a hindrance to marijuana.

McConnell has even embraced his Darth Vader meme and is fine with being a sharp-witted man. But this week he surprised everyone at the weekly Senate Republican press briefing. McConnell stopped speaking abruptly and was eventually led away, only to come back later to answer questions. Mitch McConnell, the senior Kentucky senator and Senate minority leader, has a mixed history with marijuana reform. McConnell has campaigned for the legalization of industrial hemp, a form of cannabis that can be processed into a variety of products. He pushed for a hemp legalization provision to be included in the 2018 Farm Bill, which essentially legalized hemp by removing it from the definition of marijuana under federal drug laws. This, of course, corresponds to the jobs for his home state.

Despite his support for hemp, McConnell has been a vocal opponent of medical marijuana. However, his home state of Kentucky recently became the 38th state to legalize medical marijuana, suggesting his views may be changing or he may not think it’s worth the political capital to stop the law.

He has been a consistent opponent of recreational marijuana and has tabled proposals to include marijuana provisions in defense legislation. He has blocked SAFE Banking and it is said that marijuana reform will not pass while he is Senate leader.

SAFE Banking is currently led by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and has assembled more than 40 bipartisan senators, but McConnell remains an unknown. If only he knew that the scientific community agrees that medical marijuana might be able to help those who have had a stroke and make it last.

While McConnell’s public statements suggest he’s opposed to marijuana reform, he’s also been known to take a more light-hearted approach to the industry. For example, in 2020 he was photographed frolicking in a cannabis field.
