March 2024 Leafly HighLight: The prismatically delicious Z variety

Would a variety with a different name smell as sweet?

The Original Z (you know his first name) achieved its worldwide status with a nearly overwhelming smell that hits your nose with hints of slightly sweet, highly astringent citrus notes. Since The Original Z took home its first major gold medal at the 2016 Emerald Cup, few strains can claim to have taken home as many awards, especially in the last two years. There's even a new competition that 3rd Gen Family Farm has dedicated to its name – which launched last year in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

Looking at the 965 reviews on Leafly, consumers agree that Original Z is known for providing rapid physical relaxation and euphoria that many people find appropriate at any time of day. A survey of Leafly users found that at least 20% of respondents said it helped with anxiety, stress or depression; Reviews say: “I felt a tingling sensation in my fingers from the very first pull.”

Leafly smokers really love the calming feeling that Z seems to bring about, but one of the best has to be: “I just walked around my house non-stop for about ten minutes and it's the coolest thing.”

“I've been walking around my house non-stop for like ten minutes and this is the coolest thing.”

Another cool thing about the Original Z is its distribution in every state where you can shop. You may not always find a straight Z – as it can be difficult to grow for retail – but these days it's mixed into almost everything leading to a…universe including Pineapple Z, Orange Z, Blue Z, Gorilla Z or even Riddlez, which combines Z with Whitethorn Rose (you may have heard about it on Bert Kreischer's podcast).

What are the terpenes of Z?

Is it possible to reduce Z's hit smell and taste to elementary particles? Humanity keeps trying. Laboratory samples marked Z had, on average, high levels of the terpenes caryophyllene, linalool and humulene. That indeed sounds like a recipe for an expressive, sweet and welcoming time.

More highlights for March

Let's keep the terps flowing with three more green weed picks for St. Patty's Day.

Green crack

Green crack marijuana strainsGreen crack

This sativa-heavy strain has left a huge footprint in smoking culture. especially on the west coast. A long-standing stoner's recipe for a powerful body high with plenty of focus, Green Crack is a strain that combines the legendary Skunk #1 with an unknown indica strain. It's been called Green Crush, Mango Crack, or simply “The Mango,” and some say it was even named by Snoop Dogg himself.

Sour Tangie

A page from DNA Genetics' Reserva Privada collection. You may have already guessed that Tangie is combined with the famous East Coast Sour Diesel. Both Leafly users and stoners in the scene report that this strain produces big bursts of energy and intense focus. Breeder notes suggest that this plant grows with two distinct phenotypes, one more similar to Diesel and the other more similar to Tangie.

AND Kush

OG Kush (David Downs/Leafly)An example of OG Kush. (David Downs/Leafly)

This famous strain that came all the way from Florida to conquer the hearts of smokers in Los Angeles for years. OG Kush's rich history has been traced and documented in print, but it is tattooed into the hearts of weed connoisseurs who love its skunky, spicy aroma with notes of lemon pawn and diesel fuel.

And that's it for the March highlights, but turn on your notifications to stay up to date on everything coming up this month, including news about Spannabis and exciting plans for 4/20 nationwide. Peace and fat!
