Man gets his day in court on cannabis charges, then gets caught with 100lbs of weed in his car as he exits the courthouse
There was a ton, nearly 100 pounds of cannabis in Newburyport, Mass today as a 43-year-old Maine man stood trial and was charged with driving without a license and possessing over a pound of marijuana.
As Boston.com reported, the 43-year-old man, who had a suspended license when the courthouse was closing for the day, walked to a Florida-registered SUV and decided to try to drive away from the courthouse. A Massachusetts State Police officer noticed the suspect, pulled over the car and arrested the man for driving without a license. When police inventoried the car, they discovered over 70 pounds of marijuana and 20 pounds of cannabis extract.
The Biddeford, Maine resident was then brought back into the same courtroom and arraigned on his new charges just minutes after the hearing on his first case of the day concluded.
As the Boston.com article reports:
A man in court on Wednesday charged with driving without a license and possession of marijuana in excess of a pound was released on his own with one condition: no driving until he has a proper license again.
Almost immediately, however, he was caught in the parking lot not only driving without a license, but also transporting more than 70 pounds of marijuana and 20 pounds of marijuana extract. according to Massachusetts State Police.
Trooper Michael Provost, who works as a court clerk for Newbury Barracks at Newburyport District Court, knew the 43-year-old man from Biddeford, Maine, was in court that day and unable to drive home with his Maine driver’s license still suspended, said the police.
Provost, who was reportedly leaving the courthouse in his squad car at the time, stopped the vehicle and arrested the man for operating a motor vehicle without a license.
Before the vehicle was towed, Provost did an inventory and soon found two vacuum-sealed bags and two duffel bags filled with marijuana, five jars of THC extract, zippered bags, a bong, and a large roll of $20 bills marked with a rubber band were secured – according to the police everything in the passenger compartment.
The man was taken to Newbury Barracks for booking and then driven back to where he had started the day, Newburyport District Court, where he was charged with driving a motor vehicle without a license and dealing in marijuana.
“He missed a court appearance before a hat-trick,” state police wrote in a press release. “But two in the same court on the same day is still pretty unique.”
As they say, better to take an Uber to your banned driver’s license weed gig than drive yourself!
