Let’s talk about THCa diamonds

They say diamonds are forever, but I’m sure they weren’t talking about those diamonds. The landscape of cannabis has evolved significantly over the last few decades and today we have a whole range of ways to consume cannabis.

Most people are still in favor of consuming the flower the “old school” method, but with newer technology comes newer integrations of smoking weed. Most people have become very familiar with certain extracts like Budder, Shatter, Honey, and Wax, which can vary in consistency and presentation.

The results of these methods also fetch a higher price compared to flowers. This is because to make one gram of these presentations you need a significantly larger amount of cannabis and technology.

Fortunately, as cannabis becomes cheaper and more available, companies can invest in researching and developing new ways to consume cannabis. One of these “newer” avenues comes in the form of THCA diamonds

What are THCA diamonds?

THCA Diamonds is known as “isolate” and this product is obtained by the targeted extraction of THCA from the soup of cannabinoids and terpenes in the first extraction process. Extraction typically works with some type of solvent mixed with the plant matter.

This breaks the connections and turns it into a soup. Then different processes at different temperatures and pressures can refine and extract a specific compound from the soup. Because of this, the price tags for these isolates are quite high.

THCA Diamonds is one such extract.

Benefits of consuming THCA diamonds

Here’s the thing about THCA – it’s non-psychoactive and has a higher bioavailability than delta-9-THC. This means that if you need high doses of THC, you can consume THCA, which will not get you high but will work in the same way as delta-9-THC in terms of relief.

For patients who require high THC doses, this is an optimal solution.

Others use diamonds as “add-ons” to their current consumables. Maybe you’ve become accustomed to one strain and just don’t get the same effect…add a bit of “diamond dust” and you’ll immediately feel the difference.

Drip Oil lab manager Jared Priset – a producer of these diamonds – said in an interview with the Phoenix New Times:

“Many patients can consume diamonds themselves; Many choose to add it to blunts or bowls to increase THC consumption,” comparing it to “an ingredient in a salad. Some products offer patients more of a prepackaged salad mix, he explained, but with various cannabinoid and terpene isolates now available, patients can customize which molecules they consume with greater precision.” – Source

How do you make THCA diamonds?

Although there are many methods, most people start with the double extraction method. Essentially, they create the terpene cannabinoid soup (the first extraction) and then use heat and pressure to create the second extraction to isolate the specific compound.

The price explains

It starts where most concentrates begin, from a slurry of plant matter that dissolves in butane solvent. First, hexane or acetic acid is added to the mixture to further separate the plant matter.

Once the plant matter is filtered out, a pure blend of cannabinoids and terpenes is then placed in a rotary evaporator, aptly referred to as a “diamond miner”.

The diamond miner uses heat and pressure to form delta-9 THCA crystals beneath liquified terpenes. This “sauce” is separated and used as its own product or added to others, Priset explained. The crystals are returned to the Diamond Miner for another baking cycle, and the result is pure THCA. – Phoenix New times

What does this mean for the market?

As more of these products launch, we’ll see a highly customizable experience unfold. Imagine being able to create your own blend of terpenes and cannabinoids until you find the absolute perfect fit.

Well, in theory – you can. The only thing is that it’s a bit expensive now to make it commercially available for most people.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not coming. We may see a future where you can choose the percentages of certain terpenes versus others, with varying levels of potency and cannabinoid balance. For medical applications, this opens up a world of new drugs that can be designed for specific conditions and provide a level of consistency that medical treatments require.
