Leafly Investigation: Which celebrity smoked weed at the US Open?
New York City’s noisy bud distracted a tennis pro at the US Open. NYC is the weed capital of the world, so it could have been anyone. Here’s our best shot at identifying the culprit.
New York smokes more than any other city in the world. You can look it up — a 2018 study proved it. But Australian tennis pro Nick Krygios didn’t like the smell during his US Open match yesterday. During his second-round contest against Benjamin Bonzi, Krygios stopped play to make a fuss over the fumes to a linesman, which led to an announcement urging viewers to quit smoking.
Cannabis was not mentioned by name. But anyone who’s been to NYC lately can attest to the damp cloud hanging over the concrete jungle.
Welcome to New York. light up!
In New York, it’s perfectly legal to smoke weed anywhere you can smoke cigarettes. Mayor Eric Adams even went so far as to encourage residents and visitors to “burn up” in May.
With the opening of legal adult weed stores delayed until mid-2023 and state regulators trying to crack down on gray market operators to pave the way for licensed ones, it’s not clear where Mayor Adams expects people to get their weed from. Although there is no shortage of places where you can legally smoke it.
The US Open toker quickly stopped and deflated, but Leafly still has questions. After studying the footage, we identified the nine celebs in attendance who have a history of sparking. Here’s our best way to find out who had the Fuego.
1. Bill Clinton

The former president claimed he did not inhale in his youth. But everyone knew back then that was BS. His half-baked admission paved the way for Barack Obama and others to inhale weary stoners and rise above weary stigmas.
2. dr Ruth Westheimer
sex expert dr Ruth Westheimer has lived an adventurous 94 years, so who says she can’t light herself where she wants? She launched her own line of wines in 2013, but the real money would be in the line for arousing cannabis products that increase users’ libido.
3. Ben Stiller

We’re watching you, Focker. Greg Focker was framed by his future brother-in-law, who used to rip up bowls and oogle Lil Kim’s hardcore poster on his wall. But if you’ve seen Stiller’s work, you know Bud must be behind at least an eighth of his silliness.
4. Mike Tyson

The retired boxing chain smokes joints on his podcast Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson, so we can’t keep it from him. He also claims to spend $40,000 a year on buds. He also said he wishes he’d smoked cannabis his entire career. But his THC-infused ear buds raise reasonable doubts that he’d need to bring gas to the tennis court.
5. Queen Latifah

In 1996’s Set It Off, the Queen and her friends recovered from a long day at work by cranking up something chronic and listening to Bone Thugs-n-Harmony on the rooftop. Who says she wouldn’t do it again?
6. Offset
Rapper and Cookies fan Offset cannot be counted as a suspect. Here is the pie-baked artist from Atlanta arriving at the GQ Men Of The Year Party 2019 in Los Angeles on December 5, 2019. (Xavier Collin/Image Press Agency/Sipa USA via AP)
“Smoking on cookies in the hotbox,” Offset rapped on the 2016 Billboard #1 hit “Bad & Boujee.” It’s perhaps the most viral cookie call of all. For that reason, we can’t trust Cardi B’s husband to smuggle some of Berner’s best into one of US tennis’s Boujee Est events.
7. Corey Stoll

A 2021 episode of Showtime’s Billions included three minutes of silence as Paul Giamatti and Corey Stoll shared a joint and an omelet, trying to hide the smell of weed from Paul’s fictional daughter. The scenery paid homage to the film Big Night (1996), but also proves that Stoll is ready to shine without limits anywhere. Also about children and tennis stars.
8. Spike Lee

Think about it. He calls his films “Spike Lee Joints”. And he’s known for getting out of control at sporting events. But even if he wasn’t this time, it should be a criminal offense for not launching a line of pre-rolled joints that bear his name.
9. Mayor Eric Adams

After reviewing all of the evidence, Mayor Adams is our final answer. The former NYPD official has given New Yorkers mixed signals about where and when to “light up” throughout the year. Looks like this will just be his last troll job and a welcome distraction from the buzzkill update that’s unlikely to hit New York’s adult market until mid-2023.
Hey what happened in the game?
Oh yeah. Nick Kyrgios won 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Bonzi gave him more trouble than expected. Or maybe it was the weeds.
Advantage, Ganja.
