Leafly Buzz: The 12 Best Cannabis Strains in September
This September, the country's budtenders are giving us their 2024 Budtender's Choice picks for the state's best strain and brand, but you don't have to wait for the results to light that fire.
Leafly Buzz flew all over California, collecting tasty nuggets and seeing which jars we downed first. After scouring the strain search trends and menus, we found ourselves in the middle of the hype stuff: Blue Gushers, Cherry Gushers, Permanent Marker Bx1, and the like.
Here are your monthly cheat codes for the best bong loads in September. Here's the Leafly Buzz for September.

Which strains are on the rise in Leafly's 9,000-strain database? (Sasha Beck/Leafly)
We broke out our calculators, connected to Leafly's strain database and ran a scan for Zaza. Here's what the stats tell us.
Lemon-cherry gelato
No. #2
Lemon-cherry gelato. (David Downs/Leafly)
Lemon Cherry Gelato is so popular you either love it or hate it. This month it climbs to the number two spot in the western states. For those new to the sport, it's an indica hybrid that's relaxing, soothing and silly. As popular as a Pinot Noir, all good cannabis brands claim to have their own version of this strain – made famous by Backpack Boyz. Some say LCG is a re-release of Gelato #33, others say Gelato x Z.
Genetic engineering
No. #8
GMO cookies. (Archive photo by David Downs/Leafly 2020)
GMO Cookies storms into the West with a stinky, sleepwalking frenzy at No. 8 this month. Chemical, gassy, and moist, GMO nuggets come in supersized sizes to fit in the bag. Oregon and Michigan both specialize in GMOs.
Gary Payton
No. #9
All-Star Gary Payton. Indica hybrid. (Courtesy of cookies)
Gary Payton gets into a tough spot, dropping to #9 this month. The dessert strain is a cross between The Y and Snowman and has a jammy, floral fuel note. Bred by Powerzzzup Genetics in the Bay Area, breeders from coast to coast have Payton in their inventory.
White Runtz
+22.4%
My goodness! Umma Sonoma White Runtz. (Courtesy of Ummas Sonoma)
Wrapping up a data grinder focused solely on cookies, we see White Runtz putting up numbers. It's up 22.4% month-over-month and has very similar characteristics to Lemon Cherry Gelato, just a little more soothing and dense. Both boast high levels of caryophyllene, limonene, and linalool.
New in the Leafly strain database
Leafly adds or corrects 1,000 strains to its database each year. Here are some of the new releases. (Sasha Beck/Leafly)
Cherry Pie x Z x Biscotti
Cherry Pie x Z x Biscotti from Bosky Genetics. (David Downs/Leafly)
In this triple cross, the classic Cherry Pie gets the sweetness of Z and the cookie flavor of Biscotti. Dark, icy, bold and moist, this taste is another reward at the end of the day. Top indoor flower breeder Bosky won the Transbay Challenge qualifier in San Diego this summer with Cherry Pie x Z x Biscotti.
Blue fountains
Manufactured by the brand Blue Gushers. (David Downs/Leafly)
California and Arizona brand Made breeds Blue Gushers, a Triangle Kush x Gelato 41 strain with a blue tint and sweet, sticky berry flavor. Blue Gushers is a sweet hybrid to get creative with or get inspired by a nature video.
Pink Froot
Colorado-based Green Dot Labs is back in October with another exclusive cannabis strain: GDL's Pink Frōōt strain has a tropical toffee flavor and a euphoric, yet functional high.
Sour Elvis
Sour Diesel and the Elvis strain (AK-47 x Skunk #1) come together in Sour Elvis, spotted in Hall of Flowers by East Coast brand Nature Always Wins. It's a truly unique blend of old-school sour with more fuel and thanks from Elvis.

Double rainbow
Good ways
Double Rainbow will get experienced smokers high with a 37% THC indica hybrid cross of Rainbow Cookies and Purple Hulk. One glass of Happy Trails got me uncomfortably high, and yet I kept getting half pipes and riding the rainbow, holding on with deep breaths and water. Sometimes you just want a trip. Woman-owned and socially-owned floral company Happy Trails out of Oakland, California, is still a blast.
Set the charts on fire
Pineapple Jack
Good ways
Phew, we broke the cookie spell with a classic Pineapple Jack, made by Happy Trails in California. It has pineapple, tropical and pine notes and tangy, concentrated daytime effects. Pineapple Jack will make this art project a success.

Cherry Eater
SF Canna
While Made grows Blue Gushers in the South, SF Canna has Cherry Gushers (Acai x Black Cherry Funk) for the Bay Area. Candy, energy in a beautiful, multi-colored, resinous package – Cherry Gushers is great after a backyard meal with the gang.
Fun on a budget
Permanent marker Bx1
Made
Permanent Marker, the Leafly Strain of the Year 2023, continues to come out on top with Permanent Marker Bx1, which stands for Backcross. It's even more of what makes Permanent Marker a winner – magical marker fumes and a dramatic dark look. Bred by Seed Junky and grown on a large scale by Made – it's another perfect after-work treat.
High grade
We finish with some Fuerte. (Sasha Beck/Leafly)
Puffco's new Storm Peak and Proxy
Puffco's annual party, Puffcon, is here, and with it the latest color for their successful range. This time it's the smoky blue “Storm” colorway for the New Peak and Proxy. The Puffco offers the prettiest way to take a friend who wants to start dabbing along. However, the advanced settings are not to be trifled with.
OK, we're diving into the fray at the Hall of Flowers in Santa Rosa. We're back with more hot, hot heat from the weed beat.
