Leafly Buzz: 13 Top Cannabis Strains of March

The month leading up to April 20 saw no calm before the storm, Leafly Nation.

The US cannabis industry moved to Barcelona, Spain, and for two weeks it raged around the 25,000-strong Spannabis Festival. All the big names dropped seeds. Jars of live rosin were passed around like ambrosia at a stoner bacchanalia.

Back on the West Coast, there was a winter heatwave with duck sauce in LA, mitten cake batter in Oregon and apple butter in Washington.

Each month, Leafly rounds up what’s worth smoking on the west coast. We grow, shop, smoke samples and analyze search traffic to create your cheat code for the best bong loads of the month. Here’s Leafly Buzz in March.

A Mass Plant Now – Modded grapes should be growing profusely this spring. Very calming hybrid indica effects that reviewers report can help with anxiety, stress or pain.

Explosive tropical rainbow fruit flavor and divine hybrid dinner effects helped Zortzi win the Ego Clash Barcelona 2023 for flowers. It’s so cool to see how the rugged region of Spain’s Basque Country is contributing to the global Z-wave that started in Mendocino County, CA. Breeder Bask Triangle Farms crossed Z to Ortzadar. “Ortzadar” is the Basque word for “rainbow” and crosses Z x Cookies and Cream.

The Wizard Trees brand builds on their RS11 work with 11:11 – this is RS#11 x RS#11. This LA native strain sold out first at Spannabis, and we’re excited for more candy gas goodness from this lineage created from OZ Kush x Sunset Sherbert.

Challah bread

DNA Genetics’ sold out cross of Baker’s Delight x Kosher Kush, Challah Bread, is coming to gardens near you. Consumers want “gas but new,” said Rezwan Khan, CEO of DNA Genetics, just as Hollywood sequels try to offer “the same thing but new.” Cookies, Sherbet, and OG Kush all blend together in this mostly indica strain. Twist a little and jump into the new season of Mandalorian or John Wick: Chapter 4.

Duck Sauce from Teds Budz, CA

Ted's Budz duck sauce. Hybrid Indica. (West Coast Weed Reviews for Leafly)Ted’s Budz duck sauce. Hybrid Indica. (West Coast Weed Reviews for Leafly)

LA’s premier legal stud, Ted’s Budz, brings some of Northern California’s most coveted warmth to SoCal, where fans eagerly await their next drops. Teds Budz’ new duck sauce has been phenomenally sought after in collaboration with the self-proclaimed “god of duck sauce,” hip-hop artist Eastside Eggroll. Duck Sauce comes in a clear Mylar bag reminiscent of a traditional duck sauce pack. The genetics are clearly stated – Platinum Zkittlez x Gelato #41 – and you can see the buds in the bag.

These dense buds look like a mix of forest, sage, fern, moss and deep Sacramento greens. Dark, twine-colored pistils weave unobtrusively across the surface, weaving through a profusion of glittering, egg-cream trichomes. It creates a candy-like scent with a sweet, creamy base and a matching dry hit on the wrist. When smoked, the inhale has a sugary citrus quality that turns into a candy gas with an orangey finish on the exhale. The head swap brings a very chilled, long-lasting effect that puts a bit of weight on the shoulders and makes you want to take a seat. But it’s not overly soothing and would go fantastic with a day off and a new video game. If you’re a Zkittlez or Candy Gas fan, you’ll love this duck sauce from Teds Budz.

Apple Butter from Torus, WA

Toru's apple butter. Hybrid indica. (Will Hyde for Leafly)Toru’s apple butter. Hybrid indica. (Will Hyde for Leafly)

Washington-based Torus’ Apple Butter is a musky, wet flower with a painterly balance of deep hues coated in a heavy glaze of shimmering trichomes. This cut is specifically the #2 phenotype of their Jet Fuel Gelato x Apples & Bananas hybrid featured in Torus’ Prototype series. The Prototype line allows everyone to evaluate the different strains that Torus is testing. This way you can share your feedback and let them know which phenotypes stand out the most and should stay in rotation.

Apple Butter’s sugared buds create a unique blend of skunk flavor that becomes pungent and gassy as it breaks down, and a subtle buttery-sweet apple aroma that gives way to a floral finish. Apple Butter #2 is a perennial favorite thanks to its quality healing and smooth flavor. (Buy Torus Flower on Leafly.)

Seed Junky Genetics has created dozens of people-friendly profiles, but the decadent, dessert-oriented facial expressions always seem to take the cake. Oregon producer Louis Vuchron showcases these sugary sweet flavors with his outstanding Mitten Cake Batter. This cross of Mitten Cake x Kush Mints doubles down on fresh and cooling mint notes with an extra load of sweet gas and sugar cookie dough. The effects are equally impressive – a quick joint acts as a pronounced but functional mood enhancer.

Solid, classic OG Kush flavor and potency comes from the Cabrona strain from Humo – a Mexican-American greenhouse brand in Salinas, California, owned and operated by women. Cabrona is a cross between Cannarado’s Daily Driver (Sundae Driver x Cookies and Cream) and Phinest’s Chem D (OG Kush x Sour D). Grapefruit MTN Live Rosin by Premier Cannabis, WA

Premier Cannabis Grapefruit MTN. (Will Hyde for Leafly)Premier Cannabis Grapefruit MTN. Hybrid. (Will Hyde for Leafly)

Washington’s Premier Cannabis has beautiful, award-winning fresh press live rosin. One dab of the stringy, honey-like rosin and it’s easy to see why it won Best Rosin at last month’s NW Leaf Bowl. So-called “fresh-pressed” live rosin is fresh, unlike “cold-set” live rosin, which changes color and consistency as it ages and stabilizes in the refrigerator. This freshly pressed live rosin is surprisingly easy to serve and remains incredibly stable, retaining its translucent stickiness longer than it takes to dab through the entire gram.

Grapefruit MTN live rosin has pungent citrus flavors that coat your mouth with sour ruby red grapefruit and finish with a smooth skunkiness. The flavor combination is like a grapefruit version of Trop Cookies that has a steady hit of citrus flavor that will leave you wanting more.

And that’s it for Leafly Buzz in March. Never miss the latest run – download the Leafly app (Android, iOS) and turn on notifications to discover these flavors first.
