Leafly Buzz: 12 Hot Cannabis Strains for May 2024

Fresh from grilling and chilling on Memorial Day, we have a dozen top-notch weed tips to heat up your summer, Leafly Nation.

We didn't just scour the online menus, stores, and grow rooms. We threw a damn weed festival – SF Weed Week – and invited all the coolest growers. And guess what, the honeypot worked. We spent the last four weeks elbow-deep in bags of hype trees. Here are our must-see hits for May:

Trop Cherry (also known as Tropicana Cherry) wins all summer, folks. Tropicana Cookies x Cherry Cookies F3 from Colorado-based Relentless Genetics will make you focused, energetic, and creative. These are the qualities we need during the long days. It smells and tastes like it sounds – with tropical citrus, as well as notes of berries and tree fruits. “The best sativa I've ever had – bar none,” said one reviewer.

lemon Tree

⬆️14%

Happy, energetic and talkative, the modern classic Lemon Tree is becoming increasingly popular this month. It's Lemon Skunk x Sour Diesel and packs a punch. The lemon and diesel flavor is delicious in the sun.

Candy smoke

⬆️12%

Hype breeders and hash makers like 710 Labs took Candy Fumez to new heights in May. Breeder Bloom Seed Co developed this strain to sell hash and satisfy the sweet tooth of cannabis culture. Mission accomplished. It's Z x Sherbanger and perhaps the start of a new era. “If you get your hands on this, don't make the mistake of buying small quantities!” said one Leafly reviewer.

Permanent marker

High five yourselves, Leafly smokers, we did it. The 2023 Leafly Strain of the Year Permanent Marker has settled into the top 10 on the West Coast. Shop phenomenal examples from Connected Cannabis Co. and CAM; plus new crosses from Seven Leaves and even more from Arcata Fire.

True Ryder AND

With the real OGs getting harder to find, look north. True Ryder OG from Arcanna Outdoor Mendocino County made it to the test shelf not long ago this May. It's a mix of Fire OG x (True Kush x Blue Dream) x Big Cherry (aka Sour Cookies) for that pumped up, peppery, pine spirit fun. If you've earned some time by the river, True Ryder OG will make the sunlight and colors even better.

Peppermint sleigh ride

May is still peak season for outdoor weed in 2023 – it all depends on how you store and cure it. You know who does that well? Emerald Cup winners Greenshock Farms. They brought a few small batches of Peppermint Sleighride for SF Weed Week in April. We smoked a half ounce of this from Solful last month – and came back to its candied grapefruit, pine and mint flavors and its happy, present and content feelings. It's Purple Candy Cane x Pina from Mark at Greenshock who also swears by these outdoor smells and effects.

Guava Runtz x Cherry Gushers

Now turning their attention to hip indoor flavors, Bosky Genetics is setting California alight with its pristine, loud, and potent lineup. Everything Bosky grows hits like a dump truck, but Guava Runtz x Cherry Gushers has real cherry terpenes that will make heads swear, “GYAT!” Ryan Bosky combines decades of cultivation experience with customized in-house flavors like these for high-quality, small-batch production.

Randy Watson

While smoking the Emerald Cup Pre-Roll Judge Kit in the Hash Holes subcategory, I came across Randy Watson – a cross between Runtz and Wedding Crashers. We've seen 710 Labs work with it and now Hash Hole brand Dunkz. They're dessert candy terps with an earthier funk. Randy Watson is a minor character in Coming to America (1988), which has become a pop culture reference.

New on the shelves

Lemon Pepper by MOCA

Indoor soil growers MOCA of Eureka, California have a sativa to match your sunshine – Lemon Pepper. Lemon Cooler x Lemon Pebblez for super lemony, but syrupy and dank. Not thin or grassy. Those who like gelonade, fizz and lemon can use Lemon Pepper. MOCA grows batches in pound or ten pound quantities and can't stock them on the shelves. This is a strong buy.

Set the charts on fire

Tangerine Sunrise by UpNorth

Start your day with UpNorth's Tangerine Sunrise and enjoy a deep, candied tangie syrup and boozy vibes with your cup of coffee. Sleep in, make waffles, wake up and bake, and start gardening. UpNorth has a selection of fine heritage producers in the Emerald Triangle and only releases 6-star knockouts. Tangerine Sunrise is a cross between Hawaiian Sunrise and Tangerine Haze.

Ballin out

Wagyu from Clout King

The Clout King brand is wowing the crowds in several states. A highlight of this quarter – their Wagyu. It's a cross between Meatbreath and Lemon Cherry Gelato, so the spicy terpenes of the Meatbreath are pushed back by the crowd-favorite LCG. Leafly's reviewers find unique apricot, chestnut and coffee notes in this strain. It leaves you with a tingling, sleepy and relaxed feeling. Some use it for stress and mood stabilization. That's logical, because after a big helping of Wagyu, nothing stresses you out so much

Fun on a budget

LA Pop Rocks x Purple Push Pop by Seven Leaves

One thing we love about legal weed – the joints and nuggets have gotten so much bigger. What they sell as “smalls” look and smoke like a real dope. Indoor brand Seven Leaves from Sacramento, California, has released smalls of the candy sherbert strain LA Pop Rocks x Purple Push Pop and it's exactly what we need. It's got 27% THC, which is plenty, and you're paying for less strain.

Cherry Marker + Whitethorn Rose Hash Hole by Rosin Tech

I'm reviewing this month's Emerald Cup pre-rolls. I don't think most people are ready for the new “hash hole” era we're in. Rosin Tech Labs has a hash-packed mega joint that's made up of 1.3 grams of CAM Cherry Marker flower and 0.3 grams of Huckleberry Hill Farms Whitethorn Rose rosin. Permanent Marker's rare cherry phenom smelled and tasted like cherries from the note in the glass to the dry hit to the burn. The delicate, floral, floating Whitethorn Rose comes through when the rosin is ignited. This joint could burn 10 people. Smoke the whole thing with a buddy and your day is over.
