Jonah Hill plays Jerry Garcia in the Martin Scorsese Musical Biopic
Acclaimed director Martin Scorsese plans to create a musical biopic of the Grateful Dead, and Jonah Hill has been cast as frontman Jerry Garcia.
Deadline first brought the news that the epic biopic is about to become a reality. Hill posted the story on Instagram, with a hands-up emoji and a skull emoji depicting the band name.
There will be high expectations. Hill worked with Scorsese on The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013 when the brilliant but eccentric real-life investor Donnie Azoff went to drug-fueled parties with Jordan Belfort. It was this role that earned Hill his second Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Scorsese directed the six-part Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip, released in 2017 and named after Garcia’s quote, “What a Long Strange Journey It Has Been”.
“The Grateful Dead were more than just a band,” Scorsese said in a statement at the time the documentary series was announced. “They were their own planet, populated by millions of devoted fans. I am very happy that this picture is being created and I am proud to be part of it. “
The film will be finalized at Apple, the same place where Scorsese is working on his next film, Killers of the Flower Moon, which will star Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who worked on American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson, will be working as writers on the project.
The Grateful Dead was founded in 1965 in the Bay Area, California as a cornerstone of the counterculture movement. Long story short, the jam band has become synonymous with the psychedelic counterculture movement. Garcia died in 1995. The band seems to support the musical biopic.
Weir, Kreutzmann, Lesh and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead have been named as executive producers. Trixie Garcia, the daughter of Jerry Garcia, will also act as executive producer as manager of the band Bernie Cahill, including Eric Eisner.
A release or production date for the film has not yet been announced at this time.
Garcia handpicked
Last year the Garcia family – led by Trixie Garcie – launched Garcia Hand Picked, their own line of cannabis products and merchandise. Garcia handpicked. The line includes eight-ounce jars or five-joint packs with pre-rolls in indica, sativa, and hybrid. Guitar pick shaped gummy candies fortified with 5 mg of THC per gummy bear in 20 gummy cans are a popular choice.
After “an extensive search for the right partner to create this cannabis brand,” Trixie said in 2019, the family finally agreed with Holistic Industries to collaborate on the project. “Their values are rooted in a family business and they have a track record of operating and creating cannabis brands across the country. We can’t wait to share Jerry Garcia’s cannabis collection with fans next year. ”
Trixie told Rolling Stone that Jerry smoked weed as a social tool when he was around other people.
Rock journalist Al Aronowitz interviewed Jerry Garcia in 1972 – but the interview wasn’t published in the High Times until January 2001. Jerry described the atmosphere in San Francisco. “There was a lot of fighting, race riots, all the high school shit that was so hard in the 50s,” said Jerry Garcia. “Gangs cruise with fellow crooks on a Friday night, drink wine and argue. The hilltops of the city were not yet built on. It was still like going to the country. Trees, ponds, grass, animals. We went up one day and smoked a couple of joints. Then I really got into it. I didn’t want to change my mood, I wanted to get stoned! “
