Joe Rogan slams US Customs for seizing weed and psychedelics
Joe Rogan is not happy after US Customs and Border Protection (CPB) said he recently seized a shipment of cannabis, psilocybin and MDMA from a vehicle. Once again, the podcaster is vocal about his views and says CPB officials should try psychedelics themselves instead.
Port of Champlain CBP officers encountered a vehicle carrying a 30-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, both US citizens, returning home from a vacation in Canada. The vehicle failed inspection and was referred to the secondary inspection area for further investigation.
On June 5, US Customs and Border Protection tweeted that they had confiscated a car full of cannabis, psilocybin mushrooms and psilocybin edibles, and MDMA from the vehicle.
“On Wednesday, the vehicle of two U.S. citizens returning from Canada was inspected by Champlain CBP officers,” U.S. Customs tweeted. The inspection resulted in officers confiscating raw ecstasy, marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms and placing them in a candy bar.”
Officials posted photos of mushrooms in front of a pop-top canister that likely contained the weed. The other photo showed what appear to be MDMA tablets.
While cannabis is legal – sometimes on both sides of the border – taking it across border lines is a no-no, and the penalties vary wildly. In this case, cannabis is legal on both sides of the border; in Montreal and in the state of New York. The multitude of drugs present in the car did not help either.
“Subsequent physical inspection of the vehicle revealed various narcotics including ecstasy, marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms in raw form and infused into a candy bar,” according to a June 3 press release. “The narcotics field tested positive for the presence of methylenedioxymethamphetamine [MDMA]Marijuana and psilocybin.”
But for Joe Rogan, the type of drugs doesn’t matter; He believes the government shouldn’t decide which substances are legal. In a June 6 tweet, Rogan slammed US customs and said they should try psychedelics for a change.
But CPB officials persisted in their efforts.
“Our CBP officers remain engaged and vigilant and are successfully intercepting these illegal substances,” said Steven Bronson, Champlain Port Director. “I’m proud of their enforcement efforts to keep our communities safe.”
Rogan is known for his often controversial views as well as cannabis and psychedelics in particular. Of all the psychedelics, Rogan has been the loudest about dimethyltryptamine (DMT), saying that there are “lessons to be learned” from having the DMT experience.
“The experience is so overwhelming and so alien,” Rogan told Rolling Stone in 2015. “It’s just hard for anyone to describe. You’re just, boom! Shot right through everything for 15 minutes. Constantly changing geometric patterns. Pranksters in jester hats all pointing the finger at me…”
For Joe Rogan’s 50th birthday in 2017, High Times staff superimposed his face over Tommy Chong on an old issue. The real cover actually features a young Chong on the cover of a 1989 issue.
In addition to being an advocate for psychedelics and cannabis, Rogan is known for his controversial views on unverified medical claims such as anti-vaccination conspiracies. Even his $200 million Spotify deal came into question given his views on COVID and other issues that some people claim are misleading and dangerous.
However, Rogan’s views on relaxing cannabis and psychedelics laws are a bit more popular in general. Even MDMA is being watched for its potential medical benefits.
