I’m obsessed with microdosing 1mg edibles. Here’s why.
Every day for the past week I’ve been enjoying the effects of one of the most enjoyable cannabis products I’ve come across in a long time.
However, when I say “most enjoyable,” I don’t mean the one that has brought me the most. Far from it.
Yes, my friends, I’m talking about one of cannabis’ underrated, unsung heroes: the microdose edible. Specifically, the 1mg Relief 5:1:5 Ginger Mints from the multistate brand Mr. Moxey’s.
Before we continue, I would like to point out that this is not a paid ad. The mints caught my eye at Seattle’s excellent Dockside store, and the rest is history.
I was drawn to the mints for reasons beyond their tiny amount of THC: they also contain 5mg of CBD and 5mg of super-soothing CBG. Taken together, this bouquet of smaller cannabinoids proved far more potent and effective than the sum of its parts. In other words, the entourage effect in action.
And look, I can well imagine that you, dear reader, are rolling your eyes now. Rest assured, many of my friends have already preempted you. I get it. Micro-microdose products are not for everyone.
But all I ask is, don’t knock before you try it.

Microdosed edibles offer a plethora of benefits
I first came across microdosed edibles a few years ago thanks to Kiva’s 2.5mg Petra Mints.
Even if the mints felt like outliers in the market, there are similar products in almost every jurisdiction: Goodship rocks 2.5-milligram lozenges in Washington state, Colorado’s Lucky Edibles tosses 2-milligram candies, and California boasts Zeno with a 0.4 milligram tablet to name a few.
These products offer a handful of benefits. They make cannabis more accessible to inexperienced users. They enable a particularly finely tuned dosage. And for those of us prone to cannabis-induced anxiety (hello you too), they offer an almost guaranteed solution.

CBG gets by with a little help from his friends
I was particularly excited that the Relief Mints contain CBG (cannabigerol). This non-intoxicating cannabinoid is often referred to as the mother of all cannabinoids: when a cannabis plant grows, CBG is one of the first cannabinoids to emerge. Over time, the plant converts it into THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids. By the time the plant is harvested, only trace amounts of CBG remain.
CBG has a reputation for providing significant pain relief. It’s also showing promise as a remedy for anxiety and insomnia, as reported by Leafly’s Amelia WIlliams earlier this year.
Sugar and spices and all nice: Mr. Moxey’s 1mg Ginger Relief Mints.
Low-dose products like these breath mints can be particularly effective when taken together – this reaction is known as the entourage effect.
As Nick Jikomes recently noted in his Leafly column, the entourage effect allows cannabis products containing multiple cannabinoids, such as CBD and THC, to provide much more pain relief than an isolated cannabinoid.
I was curious to find out if that would be the case with these happy ginger jollies and specifically if the entourage effect would enhance the effects of the CBG.
The short answer? Definitely.

Relief Mints induced great indica-like effects
Every time I’ve taken a Relief Mint, I’ve experienced surprisingly pronounced effects of both CBD and CBG.
I felt the calming properties of these cannabinoids most clearly in my knees and upper back muscles. The tension there – in my case caused by both hunched over long computer work (including, yes, right now) and climbing – melted away.
In addition, my mind felt relaxed, absolutely calm. I felt centered, clear-headed, and extremely calm.
Despite the tiny dose of THC, I still felt a bit aloof and slowed down, and I don’t recommend taking Relief Mints if you’re trying to engage in intense physical activity.
As I mentioned, I’ve been taking one of the mints every day since I bought them last week. My favorite experience with them was during a soft concert in Missoula. I felt relaxed sinking into my theater seat and was able to enjoy the music in an extremely relaxed state. When the show ended, I left the concert feeling not only rested but also mentally refreshed.
Honestly, the most rewarding thing about these micro-tinned mints was that they reminded me that cannabis can serve us all in myriad ways. Sometimes you have to accept a product that your smoking friends might make fun of. Otherwise, you may be missing out on a new, positive, and empowering cannabis experience.
