I smoked a joint in the fight against COVID-19, here’s what happened.
For the most part, I’ve tried to stay out of the Covid-19 conversation, mostly because I’m not a virologist. I’m not a health professional either.
I’m just a seasoned cannabis user who has the ability to string words together in a way that isn’t overly boring.
Sometimes I scold, sometimes I give insights into the industry. But to talk about Covid would be just “click bait” for me
That’s up to now.
Because unfortunately I tested positive for Covid a few days ago and now have first-hand experience with the disease.
I’ll talk a little bit about how I felt in the beginning and how I feel now, but more importantly – what happened to me when I took a few puffs off a joint.
Of course, this is just one person’s experience with cannabis and Covid. Therefore, do not see this as “absolute truth” but rather as the “subjective experience” of an experienced writer.
Reginald BV (before the vid)
Almost a week before writing this article, I began to suspect that I might have had Covid. It started with a persistent headache.
I went to bed with a headache and woke up with one. I drank some acetaminophen and coffee, took a couple of puffs from a pipe, and managed to ease the pain for a while.
However, after 3 days of worsening the headache, I knew something was wrong.
I was also incredibly dehydrated the entire time and started drinking lots of electrolytes to keep myself hydrated. I would drink 1-2 liters a day.
How did it feel
In the early stages of the disease, I just felt like I was hungover all the time – but then the fever started.
I had never really gotten deep into fever zone, but I was floating around there. I hit the fever threshold one night, but a shower helped bring it back down.
At that point I knew I was being fucked.
When my mother-in-law, who was living with us at the time, tested positive – my suspicions that I had also been infected with the virus were confirmed.
Now I had to get tested because if I did get infected I had to take some precautions in my home.
By this point the illness was severe, the headache intensified, and the dehydration was real.
I also stopped smoking weed, of course. I just didn’t want it and wanted to sleep as much as possible.
However, for personal reasons, I’d prefer not to mention in this article – I couldn’t sleep much. I was probably getting a solid 5 hours of interrupted sleep a day with very few meals.
Conditions were not optimal for recovery.
Nevertheless, I had to get tested at this point and went to the next clinic.
I don’t like the test any more than I do with Covid
If you haven’t been tested with the PCR or antigen test – it’s basically the process of a doctor scraping the inside of your nasal cavity with a long cotton swab.
It’s not a very fun experience.
It was quick and I decided to just do the antigen test since my mother-in-law had it, I was almost sure I had it too.
The tests have confirmed it – positive!
What the doctors told me
Now that I knew that I actually had Covid, I consulted some doctors about what to do. Since my O2 saturation was okay, the recommended course of action was – horse riding.
They prescribed vitamin C, zinc, omega-3 tablets, and acetaminophen for the pain.
For my own mental peace, I decided not to watch Covid News and doubled up on my Meditation & Deep Breathing.
Otherwise it would be important to get as much sleep as possible.
When the headache subsided …
Eventually my headache subsided and I felt a lot better. I wasn’t fine yet, but I definitely felt a lot better than the 3-4 days before.
And then it happened!
Like Dewey Cox – I went odor blind!
It happened recently, but I am currently writing this article without being able to smell anything. It started when I was boiling and couldn’t smell the seasoning I was making.
Then I confirmed it by opening my weed jar and deep and lo and behold – NOTHING!
I sniffed the glass deeply and smelled absolutely nothing. The strangest sensation ever.
I decided – since I was feeling a little better – to roll a mini-spliff to see how I would react. My wife also has Covid and it helped a lot for her.
I took some good hits out of a joint and waited.
What happened when I smoked a joint in the middle of Covid?
My whole body suddenly became hot and I started doing some deep breathing exercises to stabilize myself. I felt a little agitated, thick in my head and a burning sensation in my eyes.
For me, smoking weed didn’t help with symptoms, especially since I couldn’t sleep as much as I would like.
It took me a good 10-15 minutes to regain my composure, but I was noticeably affected by the few grass hits. My body told me not to smoke weed anymore.
I didn’t operate at 100% for the rest of the evening and eventually managed to even out.
The sticky end result
For some people, smoking cannabis helps with their Covid symptoms – for me it did the opposite. Maybe it would have been different if I could sleep, but in my particular case, I won’t smoke weed until I’ve cleared the final hurdle of this disease.
I’m not someone who tells people how to live their life. This article is intended only as a guide for those thinking about smoking weed while having Covid, in order to make a more informed decision about their actions.
