I got high on Delta-8 THC for a week to see how it was different from regular THC weed
By now you’ve heard of Delta-8 THC and the tremendous pressure to have it shipped and sold across state lines. You may be asking yourself questions like, what is Delta-8 THC, does it get you high like regular weed, how is it legal, and why are so many states now banning it or making it illegal. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I decided to only use Delta-8 THC for a week and see how it compares to smoking and eating the “real” marijuana products with normal, old THC it says. So what happened and what was it like taking hemp-based Delta-8 THC for a week and why would anyone switch from regular THC to Delta-8?
I think the best way to set this up is with a short FAQ type article so we can answer the big 5 questions about Delta-8 THC and go straight to the review. Just like that…
What is Delta-8 THC and why are people losing their bananas because of it?
Get to know the Delta-8-THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) which is very similar to the Delta-9-THC cannabinoid. Perhaps you already know THC, the legendary cannabinoid responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis. Both are very similar, and the only thing that makes them different is the presence of some electrons.
Delta-8-THC is one of the four most common cannabinoids found in dried bud, but it still makes up less than 1%. Others include CBD, CBN, and THC. Just like its close cousin THC, Delta-8 also has psychoactive effects, although it is less potent.
Delta-8-THC is different from Delta-9-THC and this explains the differences in the physical and mental effects produced by both compounds. Delta-8-THC has a double bond on the 8th carbon while Delta-9 has a double bond on the 9th carbon. This difference in the orientation of the double bond completely differentiates Delta-8-THC from Delta-9-THC, although there are still some similarities.
The National Cancer Institute defined it in its definition of Delta-8-THC as an analog of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite stimulating, analgesic and neuroprotective properties. Further clarification of the compound shows that it binds to CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors in the central nervous system. These cannabinoid receptors are G-protein coupled receptors. When bound to these receptors in the brain, delta-8-THC also causes a feeling of euphoria, although not as strongly as delta-9-THC.
Delta, Delta, Lamba, Lamba, isn’t that all THC, so who cares?
This is where it gets complicated or interesting, depending on where you are in the industry. We know Delta-8 gets you high, similar to regular THC, but only a Delta, but THC is listed as a List 1 drug on the CSA or Controlled Substance Act and is by the. Considered a very dangerous drug by the US federal government and has extremely strict distribution and sales protocols. Delta-8 THC is technically not the THC compound as it has a double bond on the 8th carbon if you want to get back to chemistry class and the periodic table. Boom! We have a void! Delta-8 THC is technically not on the CSA and is not regulated by the US federal government. The gap becomes even bigger when you find out that you can extract Delta-8 from hemp and make products that will get you high but that are legal under the Farm Act of 2018, which legalized hemp in all 50 states. So we have an extra 8 carbon atom attached that keeps it off the Controlled Substance Act, and since you can make it out of hemp in a lab, to make it short, it’s legal under the Farm Act, right? Check out our story about Josh Swisher, the chemist who figured it all out and how to do it.
Wait, so the hippies and chemists figured out a way to beat the US government when it comes to getting high and shipping products across the country to get you high?
They did it for a while, but the device is for the most part done. State governments are banning Delta-8 THC in no time, as over 14 states have banned the sale and distribution of Delta-8 and made it illegal. The federal government is unlikely to take an official stance and change the CSA for Delta-8 at this point as they try to legalize regular old THC and prepare to impose taxes on its sales.
Why not just use regular THC and even switch or try Delta-8?
Many people have no access and no legal ways to get THC products, so the loopholes mentioned above were ways to order a product that gets you high, a molecular cousin of THC, and get it right to your door “legal” gets delivered.
Are you getting high or what’s Delta-8 like?
I tried Delta-8 THC for a week and put the “real Holyfield” on the shelf for 7 days. I’ve ordered a variety of THC edibles from Delta Munchies. I wanted to give it a full spectrum look, no pun intended so I got 5mg, 10mg, 30mg sachets and said “let’s do this”.
I started slowly as I had no idea what to expect or what experience I was going to have. Are we talking about body high like CBG? We stumble over balls like LSD or mushrooms? Are we talking about “Weed Lite”?
On my first day, I ate 5 mg of Delta-8 THC in a rubbery form. The second day was 10 mg and then 30 mg or more the day after. I ordered Delta-8 THC gums, worms, and circles.

Let’s get to what you want to know. Do you get “high high” from it? Yes, although it seemed I needed more quantity for the effect ie, for the money, you get “high high”. For example, a 10 mg THC edible would for me be a solid high AF for 3 or 4 hours, where it takes 30 mg of Delta-8 to get the same stuck feeling. Although I have a higher tolerance than “normal people”, I assume that if you need 20 mg to get a good THC hit over a couple of hours, you need to use multiples of 1.5x or 2x, in order to “come from there”. . Okay how much do you need and the amount is covered, go ahead.
Do you get high like we’ve known it for 2,000 years of regular THC use?
I wish this was a simple answer, like, “Yes, it’s exactly the same” or “No, it doesn’t really get you high”. It gets you high, but with a delta-8 carbon bond difference, you have a different feeling of getting high on delta-8 THC than with regular THC. Is it better or worse? The high was more CBG or CBD high, lots of body relaxation and body buzz, but as mentioned in our previous articles on Delta-8 THC, it is less psychoactive than regular THC.
Well then what is it like to be smeared with Delta-8 THC edibles?
You won’t get head-high or stoned like normal THC, but if you didn’t have access to “real THC” it’s a piece of cake, beggars can’t be voters, can they? It can best be described as coffee, Red Bull, Monster Energy, and 5-Hour Energy. Coffee high and addiction has been around like weed for 2,000 years, you know how much caffeine is in a cup, and you know what 1, 2, and 3 cups of coffee will do to you in one morning. Delta-8 is like the new kid on the block, the Red Bull or 5-Hour Energy. It contains caffeine, which ironically looks like a cup of coffee on the packaging. Coffee, Monster and Red Bull all have caffeine and have similar effects on you when you drink them i.e. caffeine in the blood system, yes. Are they all the same as a cup of coffee, the same effect as a 5-hour and Red Bull for everyone, no. Delta-8 THC and regular THC are similar, cousins if you will, just like coffee and Red Bulls or Monster Energies are all in the same family tree of ingredients and desired effects, but they are different. The feel and sensation of a cup of coffee is different from a Red Bull, similar at a 50,000 foot level and intended results, but different when digested and passed through the body.
If you’re used to regular THC, you won’t be as impressed with Delta-8 as it has fewer psychoactive effects than THC. If you don’t have access to regular THC, Delta-8 will blow you away and you will love it. Weed Lite might be a fitting name, yes it works, and if you don’t know better or can’t get THC in your area then it’s a good product. The body high is at the top with CBD or CBG, strong body heat and a buzz are guaranteed with Delta 8 highs, so it’s great for body aches and a good night’s sleep.
Finally
Will you drop your weed and run to hemp-based Delta-8 THC if you give it a try? No. If you don’t have access to THC, or prefer not to do a head trip like this to get high and want more of a full body high and relaxation, Delta-8 is a great solution for you. If the motto is, “I love getting high on weed, but I don’t like the crazy psychoactive effects on my head and head at times” then hemp Delta-8 THC is a great, repetitive, great product for You. It’s also cheaper and easier to get than THC if you’re in a non-legal or highly regulated market.
Think of Delta-8 THC as “Weed Lite” or “Body High Weed” and the marijuana industry now has a Red Bull or Monster Energy variant of THC. Will one replace the other, no. States prohibit Delta-8 THC monthly, yes. Enjoy it while you can, experience it and put it on the shelf for the “I want to sleep really well or relax my aching body, but I don’t want to have a THC roller coaster in my head.” ”
