How to Rehydrate Weed – The Fresh Toast
Do you have weed that has gotten a little dry? Don’t worry, we’re here for you. In this article, we’re going to teach you how to rehydrate weed and make it good as new (or pretty close).
We cover methods and tips on how to keep your weed moist or how to make your weed sticky. Whether your buds are a bit too dry or just not getting the desired effect, read on to learn how to rehydrate weed!
How to rehydrate weed
The weed you buy is carefully dried and cured by growers to optimize it for the right amount of moisture. Growers dry weed to a moisture content of around 15% and then cure it, dropping the moisture content to around 9%. This moisture content works in harmony with the cannabinoid and terpene content of the weed.
If weed dries out too much, typically below a moisture level of 6%, your weed will start to lose its potency. Over time, THC will break down into cannabinol (CBN), giving your weed a different effect.
Weed will dry out if it’s been exposed to too much direct sunlight or oxygen. To avoid having to learn how to fix dry weed (or how to rehydrate your weed), store your cannabis bud in an airtight container that doesn’t let light in. Place them in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight.

But if your weed is already dry, here’s an easy-to-follow guide to rehydrating weed.
There are several methods to rehydrate weed. Our preferred method uses natural, plant-based material and doesn’t put your cannabis at risk of getting too wet.
What you need to rehydrate cannabis with citrus peels:
- Your dehydrated weed
- A fresh citrus fruit (e.g. lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, tangerine)
- A knife
- An airtight container (preferably opaque glass, if you don’t have this you can use a jar, Tupperware container or sandwich bag)

How to rehydrate cannabis: step-by-step guide
Step 1: Wash and dry your citrus fruits.
Step 2: Use your knife to carefully remove the peel (no fruit on the inner part of the peel).
Step 3: Place your dehydrated weed in the glass jar.
Step 4: Place the peel in the jar so that it doesn’t directly touch your weed (2″ by 4″ citrus peel will do).
Step 5: Seal the jar (or whatever you’re using) airtight. Store the jar in a dry and cool place away from direct sunlight.
Step 6: Open and close the container a few times over the next 24 hours to let air in and out briefly.
Step 7: After “aerating” your weed for a day, use your rehydrated cannabis within 24 hours to keep it moist.
If you don’t have any citrus available, you can finish off this process with a piece of fresh lettuce. The great thing about using citrus is that many of the terpenes are complementary to those in cannabis, so a citrus zest not only rehydrates your weed, but it smells great too!
How do you keep weed moist?
In order to prevent weed from drying out, one must figure out how to keep weed moist. The easiest way to keep weed moist is to make sure you store it properly. Many people like to store their weed in a mason jar. This is great for showing off your buds to friends and family, but not good for preserving the quality of your weed. To prevent the weed from drying out, store your weed in opaque glass jars.

Another way to rehydrate your weed is to invest in a cannabis humidor. Designed to maximize the freshness of your weed, cannabis humidors can be a great investment depending on your needs.
If you’re not a citrus fan, or the terpenes in a citrus fruit conflict with the terpene profile of your cannabis strain, there are other methods to rehydrate your weed.
How to Reweed Weed (The Paper Towel Method)
What you need:
- Your dehydrated weed
- A paper towel
- An airtight container (preferably opaque glass, if you don’t have this you can use a jar, Tupperware container or sandwich bag)
Steps to re-wet weed with a paper towel:
Step 1: Dampen your paper towel and squeeze out the excess water so it doesn’t drip.
Step 2: Place your dehydrated weed in the glass jar.
Step 3: Fold your paper towel into a square and place it in the jar, being careful not to touch your weed. You want rehydrated weed, not wet weed.

Step 4: Seal the jar (or container) airtight and store away from direct sunlight – in a dry and cool place.
Step 5: Open and close the container a few times over the next 24 hours to let the air in and out.
Step 6: Once you’ve “aerated” your weed for a day, consume your rehydrated weed within 24 hours.
How to make your weed sticky
The stickiness of weed is the result of two things: resin and bud moisture.
- The resin in weed is produced and secreted by the trichomes. Resin is like sap and makes weed sticky
- Weed’s stickiness is also affected by its moisture content, which depends on how much moisture the bud had after processing, the harvest date (ie how old it is), and how it was stored.
Prevention is key to keeping your weed sticky. To make your weed sticky, keep it from drying out.
