How to Grow the Permanent Marker Strain

Would you like to try growing permanent markers? Lots of people will – now that it’s the leafy variety of 2023.

Available in 2022 initially as a clone, then as feminized seeds and crosses, Permanent Marker has achieved successes both big and small. It is a highly refined gelato work consisting of (Biscotti S1 x Sherb Bx1) x Jealousy F2. Here's what we learn about growing.

Permanent Marker is an indoor tested variety

Keep in mind that Permanent Marker was developed as an indoor strain in Northridge, California, with high yields, big bling, fashionably intense flavor, medium stretch, and a solid maturation time.

Seed Junky Genetics founder J Beezy said it is more of a veteran strain.

“Many growers can’t grow it. It's not that easy to grow. In terms of a strain's capabilities, it is more of an advanced strain. Not everyone will be able to maintain it. The growers who figure it out will do well, while the others will have no yield.”

Due to the size and density of the flowers, this is definitely an indoor variety. Outdoors, these thick, dense buds could cause botrytis.

“It's not the easiest. It could turn brown and there could be bud rot outside. “Your settings and your environment have to be right — outdoors, I don’t know,” JB told Leafly.

Permanent markers like light and food and don't stretch

Inside, people run permanent markers in hydroponic setups under high-pressure sodium lights, LEDs, or a mix of both.

Nicholas Mossman, head breeder at Freddy's Fuego, said the variety is not hard, easy to eat and has good structure. This is in contrast to strains like OG Kush, which dislikes intense light and food, or Sour Diesel, which is high in sugar leaf.

“Last year saw great growth for permanent marker. Growing it is very easy, we run our lights very bright, so she likes a little more micronutrients compared to some other varieties. The structure is also one we like: branched with a margarita glass structure when topped and with golf ball sized buds.”

“It doesn’t stretch much. The stretch is perfect. It's just a beautiful plant and one of those plants that always gets done. It’s a top performer,” she said.
