How does the summer heat affect your cannabis high?
The effect of summer heat on your cannabis high
The warm temperatures outside this summer are an invitation to get high and enjoy all your favorite hot-weather activities. But let’s face it, weed is damn good any time of year, even winter.
But did you know that blisteringly hot temperatures have an impact on your cannabis high – in more ways than one? Summer heat is notorious for weakening and degrading weed, but it’s also interesting to note that consuming it at this time of year can help you stay cool.
Read on below to learn all about what to do with your buds this summer.
Weed has a cooling ability
Several studies have shown that marijuana can cool body temperature, which is particularly useful during heat waves this summer. Researchers discovered that THC interacts with vanilloid receptors.
According to Emma Chasen, co-founder of Eminent Consulting and cannabis educator, “Cannabis can alter your body temperature as many compounds act as homeostatic agents, helping the body achieve balance.”
“Cannabinoids can interact with the endocannabinoid system in the hypothalamus and affect temperature regulation, while also interacting with the family of vanilloid receptors (TRPA-1, TRPM8, etc.),” Chasen tells Medmen. “The vanilloid receptors modulate our sensations of heat and pain, so when ingested by cannabinoids, they can help numb our sensations of heat,” she says.
She warns that while cannabis can help your body cool down, you shouldn’t rely solely on cannabis. “When using cannabis in the summer, it’s still important to realize that it may not protect you from overheating,” she explains. “You still need to drink plenty of water and take breaks from the hot sun,” she adds.
Other research points to the ability to increase THC’s cooling effects in the body, based on animal studies. This may explain why some of us shiver when we’re high and want to do nothing but crawl under a blanket and curl up to relax.
Consider management ways that work much faster
To benefit from the cooling properties of marijuana, it is best to consume products that are known to have a faster onset of effects. This means summer may not be the best time to consume edibles.
Try cannabis drinks and cocktails instead. The scorching heat is the perfect time to experiment and enjoy these delicious craft drinks, provided they’re made with nanoemulsion technology, ensuring you feel their effects much faster – often within minutes. These will help you stay hydrated and cool in no time.
You may also want to take sublingual tinctures, vapes, and even cannabis concentrates (for seasoned cannabis enthusiasts) to activate the chilling response much faster.
Store your vape gadgets properly
Quality cannabis vapes don’t come cheap, so make sure they’re always stored properly. This is crucial, especially during the summer, when vape devices are exposed to extreme temperatures, which can lead to leaks, cracks, malfunctions, and even weakening of the cannabis oil.
Even a slight change in temperature can cause the glass cartridges to shatter and break. Always store your vaporizers at cool room temperatures and in a well-ventilated place, ideally at a temperature of 22°C.
Make sure your edibles are stored in the right place
Keeping edible produce in your kitchen or pantry might be a good idea for the rest of the year, but you may need to reconsider if your area is at risk of heat waves. Edible chocolates and candies can tend to melt, and high heat can render the THC effect almost useless.
Edibles should always be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Sun exposure can affect its overall quality and effectiveness. If you’ve bought edibles in bulk, it’s a good idea to freeze some if you won’t be consuming them in the foreseeable future, as this can extend the shelf life without significantly compromising quality, potency, or flavor. However, when it comes time to consume the edibles, allow them to thaw slowly, as sudden changes in temperature will affect their flavor and texture.
Keep your buds out of the heat
Simply storing your weed in ziplocks or plastic bags for the rest of the year may be fine, but in the summer you may need to change your storage strategy. Sunlight and heat are some of bud’s biggest enemies, so it’s worth getting an airtight glass container.
Remember that airtight plastic can make buds sweat, so glass is always recommended, especially for long-term storage. Products made specifically for marijuana, like airtight jars that block UV rays, are great if you have the budget, especially if your house has multiple windows. Keep it in a closet and only reach for it when it’s time to take a puff or two.
If you have a large mass of bud this summer, you might want to consider humidity packs as well. These are already available in different humidity levels to ensure the quality of your buds stay fresh well into the summer.
Note: These rules also apply to CBD products. Just like THC, CBD tends to degrade in the summer heat. Store your CBD oils in a cool place; These products do not come cheap and just a few minutes to ensure they are stored properly will ensure your investment is protected from the effects of the hot sun.
