Guide to the 2024 California State Fair Cannabis Award Winners

The future continues to be in California first – this time with premium weed in the most mainstream setting of all: the State Fair.

In late June, the California State Fair began announcing the winners of its Cannabis Awards, organized by Embarc. The medalists on the podium represent the pinnacle of the craft of cannabis flower, extracts and edibles in 2024.

And the best part is: you can go outside and smoke them.

This year, the State Fair is adding a smoking area and a place to buy weed for the first time. Past fairs haven't had full-service facilities—but no one is putting Mary Jane in a corner. Now she's front and center.

Even better, you can buy the winning brand today at the state's 1,000+ stores and delivery services. So, right now. Remember, winning batches of weed are like sunsets – you get one chance and then it's gone forever. So enjoy it.

So get all the good stuff before it's gone.

The best of Emerald Triangle flowers and extracts are brought together in this gold medal winning vape pen. Ridgeline Farms dominated the Emerald Cup with their Ridgeline Runtz and in-house cross LANTZ. Arcata Fire has set the bar high for extracts from Eureka.

It's no wonder this top-quality, small-batch brand is hard to find across the state—whether on Leafly, a competitor, stores' websites, or elsewhere. The best stuff sells itself. Your best bet is to head to the California State Fair's cannabis mall and smoke zone to see for yourself.

Also, Arcata Fire will be selling Gold Medalist Vapes and three other bangers in person at Moe Greens dispensary and lounge in San Francisco, CA on 7/10 at 5pm, so please sign up for Day 1 of SF Hash Week, hosted by your humble editor.

The best stuff often comes in batches of less than 10 pounds or 1,000 jars. That rarity is part of the fun of knowing weed. San Francisco-based Snowtill, an indoor soil grower that has moved up from the traditional market, backed up its hype in June with a medal at the California State Fair.

Snowtill received a gold medal for the highest tested terpene pinene for the Piescream strain, bred by Mean Gene from Mendocino and chased by Skunktek. It is Wedding Pie x (Cherry Limeade x Gelato 33).

A search for Snowtill on Leafly turns up jars at 7 Stars, Richmond, CA, and Zen Garden, Stockton, CA. The deep East Bay is blowing hard.

Indoor soil breeders Moon Valley of North Bay, California, have won a second silver for THCA with their Leafly-popular Hash Burger strain. The win goes to hearty terpenes. Moon Valley produces in small batches and sells fast. But shop other Hashburgers near you.

Rank Rose

Coco Farms Antioch

A new strain for us, Rank Rose, comes from Coco Farms in Antioch, California, and you can buy it directly from them. Rank Rose is a gold medal winner and comes from the Pacific Reserve nursery, bred by Massive Creations. It's a super rare, potent, balanced THC:CBD strain.

OK — that's five pointers to the best weed in the world's largest and most important cannabis state. New York, the ball is in your court. Invite us to the Coney Island Cannabis Awards.

Gluttal

Shasta, California-based large-scale indoor grower Ember Valley won silver for the state's most gassy strain — that is, the strain with the highest levels of the essential oil caryophyllene. Ember Valley is available at Leafly by Herb in LA, as well as Bay Care and 7 Stars in the Bay Area. You can buy Riff OG this afternoon at Purple Star or Off the Charts in San Francisco.

Bred by Prolific Coast Seeds. Riff OG combines two OG Kushes – (Fire OG x Scott's OG) x PCS1.
