Guess what’s glueing the marijuana world together?
The cannabis industry is all about good times, fond memories, and good vibes. Most people think of smoking as someone sitting back and enjoying a joint. But lately, what’s in the head no longer translates to what’s in the mouth.
BDSA, a leader in cannabis consumer insights and data, recently released a report revealing a game changer for the industry. The data collected also showed that 57% of adults in the states surveyed believe that adult use of cannabis should be legal. A full 74% of the population are cannabis users or accept the use of cannabis. And over the past six months, 86% of cannabis users said they expect to continue using, while 66% said they definitely will.
What catches the eye is HOW people are consuming. Flowers are still the industry’s biggest source of revenue. Flowers have a mystical hold on older and more traditional consumers who see them as part of culture. Gen Z and Millennials are the second biggest revenue generator: e-cigarettes. It is perfect for an active lifestyle, versatile and discreet.
But the big news is that while bud and e-cigarettes are the main sources of income, the relatively inexpensive gummy bears are the most consumed! Despite bringing in a quarter of sales, the gummy turns out to be perfect for “knocking people out”. Fast in the mouth, tasty and odorless. A fan favorite for recreational users and medical patients.
Specifically, 49% of consumers across all states that track adult and medical use reported having consumed a gummy bear in the past six months, compared to 47% who consumed flower.
This is definitely a change from the industry’s self-image of joints, bongs, pre-rolls, and bowls. Now the future lies in a cute, colorful edible. Pharmacies have to stock up on products.

Hans Riegel bears the title “The Father of Gummy Bears”. In the 1920s, Riegel developed a soft, gelatin-based treat in the shape of a bear, which became very popular. He later created Haribo, the prestigious jelly bean maker that can be found on store shelves around the world. In the mid and late 20th century, German teachers often gave their students the bears as gifts to familiarize American soldiers with various foods. The soldiers returned these deliciously delicious bears to their families after they were stationed abroad.
Gummy bears became famous when Hollywood started to take an interest in them. Gummy bears have found a role in so many popular media such as TV shows, movies, and even musicals. Disney released Adventures of the Gummy Bears in the ’80s, and the candies even starred in the Broadway show Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
