Government Covid reports are riddled with misinformation

Let’s not look at the prognosis for Covid, a disease caused by a virus that is steadily decreasing in severity. Instead, let’s look back to assess the governing bodies that oversee the pandemic response before making further decisions. Finally, we now know that provinces intentionally published misinformation when documenting the Covid case reports to the public.

The score given to politicians and regulators will prove valuable in a recent request from Nova Scotia’s Liberal leader, for example. Iain Rankin wants Nova Scotia to continue reporting daily Covid cases. However, does Rankin know how many Covid-19 cases there really are in other conservative, liberal or socialist provinces? The answer is probably no. But let’s come back to that in a moment.

Inappropriate data collection at BC Health and the questions it raises

A particular engine that sparked regulatory decisions with public fear was constant case updates. However, towards the end of 2021, governments admitted their failure. To compensate, at least in the province of British Columbia, authorities focused exclusively on hospitalizations. Public health officials essentially failed to accurately report case data during the second half of the delta wave.

After a six month investigation, here is finally the true number of positive Covid cases in BC hospitals in 2021. Benefits of Covid shot appear to be misrepresented in data from hospitals, according to recent emails from BC government agencies along with a request for information. Then why should we allow these authorities to continue reporting cases?

Covid data hidden from public

Health Commissioner Bonnie Henry issued a public apology after a leak revealed secret nuances in Covid data. The leak related to discontinued isolations in British Columbia hospitals, to be precise.

Abandoned isolations are simply non-infectious Covid-19 hospitalizations. In other words, the person tests positive for Covid but their symptoms have reduced after 10 days. However, these cases are completely private. In addition, BC’s Department of Health and BC’s Covid communications team refused to disclose the number of isolations that have been discontinued.

However, on the day of their reply, the communications team responded via email to announce that quarantines that had ended would be reported soon. But these public reports never came about. A bigger picture, however, is the percentage of vaccinated versus unvaccinated individuals in this private dataset. Logically, vaccinated individuals should more often fall into this private category.

A request for information has yet to clear up misinformation about BC's daily Covid reports. We have yet to request data on discontinued isolations for dates in 2022. Data trends suggest these cases occurred in January and February, but Omicron was a variable.

While the BC Department of Health’s system doesn’t track vaccine data for non-infectious cases, this author obtained data from the second half of 2021 that revealed the number of non-infectious cases — after six months of research. And now the true number of non-infectious Covid cases in hospitals between June and December 2021 can finally be shared publicly.

As for Nova Scotia’s Liberal leader – what Covid case reports would you like to bring back to Nova Scotia? Validity has reportedly been improved in Covid reports from Nova Scotia. This is because the marine province has been one of the few not to have followed BC, Ontario and the US CDC in creating misinformation with Covid cases and discontinued isolations. However, due to limitations in PCR and rapid testing, Covid case reports cannot be guaranteed to be accurate in every province or country.
