Food Forest Permaculture – Meet Howie

Get to know Howie. He is the founder of Food Forest Permaculture and a passionate promoter of organic food gardening. At least one of his meals comes from his garden regardless of the season. By combining the landscape and soil techniques of the food forest and permaculture gardening, Howie can grow some amazing things.

Why so high

Howie grows a single crop of medical-grade organic cannabis seven months a year. Initially, it will sprout its seeds indoors, but once they are a few inches long, it will transplant them outside. Raised in nutrient-rich, organic soil, he takes great care to protect the plants from frost, mold and other predators. He generally plants his sun-grown crop in January, knowing that it won’t bloom until summer.

According to Howie, his harvest isn’t quite ready. The plants shown will not be harvested for a few weeks.

Thick stems

The stem of a twenty-five foot tall cannabis plant is thicker than a tall man’s wrist. That’s pretty understandable because such a tall plant needs a solid base. However, it’s still pretty shocking to see it. Made of sturdy fibers, he kills his plants with an ax. I asked Howie what he did with the leftover stems and he told me that most of them are made into mulch. Sometimes he gives them away to carve into walking sticks or to use in art; Once dried, its cannabis stems harden like wood.
