What to do with AVB cannabis?

Some people call ABV “Already Been Vaped” while others call it AVB “Already Vaped Bud”.

Whether you prefer AVB or ABV, you may notice that your weed looks completely different after vaping. The color may have changed from green to brown, but that doesn't mean it's no longer usable.

“Already Vaped Bud,” or AVB for short, is the crunchy brown flower that remains after vaporizing marijuana.

Although most cannabinoids like THC are vaporized, the herb does not turn to ash and retains some of the cannabinoid content, meaning it can be reused if you know how.

However, not all AVBs are the same. If your vaporizer reaches very high temperatures, your AVB will likely not have much potency left. However, if you vaporize at the right temperature using convection heating (around 150-230°C), you will be surprised at how much potency you can still get out of the remaining herb.

The potency of your AVB will depend not only on the temperature at which it is vaporized, but also on the potency of your cannabis flower and the method you use to use the AVB. As always, when working with your final product, remember to start with a low dose and go slow until you understand the potency. After that, all you have to do is enjoy!

How to use AVB Weed

Your AVB weed may not be as potent as it was before you vaped it, but it still contains beneficial cannabinoids that can be put to good use. Instead of throwing away your AVB weed, you can collect it and put it to good use. Here are some popular ways to recycle AVB weed.

Edible

Topping the list of uses for AVB is probably the most obvious use – food. Baking or cooking with AVB is a great option as it helps mask the taste while still taking advantage of the remaining cannabinoids.

Like ground herbs, AVB can be used in everything from delicious brownies to adding flavorful sauces.

Unlike freshly dried flower, AVB has already been decarboxylated and is ready to use! Just add it to your recipe and enjoy. However, start with lower doses in your recipes as potency can vary. It's better to bake a batch of less potent brownies and have an excuse to eat two than to bake one that's so potent you can only tolerate one.

Water hardening AVB

To remove the bitterness from AVB weed, you can water treat it. This process takes advantage of the fact that THC is insoluble in water, while bitters are soluble. To water treat your AVB weed, take some cheesecloth and wrap the AVB weed into a tight ball. Then tie it tightly. Submerge the AVB ball in a cup of water and let it sit for a few days, preferably a week.

You will notice the brown color seeping from the AVB weed into the water. Remove the cheesecloth ball of the AVB weed and squeeze out the excess liquid. Then let the water-treated AVB weed air dry. Alternatively, if you are in a hurry, you can use a baking pan and bake it in an oven set to 75-90°C for a few hours. The cannabinoids are water-insoluble and will remain present in the AVB weed, but the unpleasant bitterness will be removed by the water treatment. You can use water-treated AVB weed for smoking or cooking.

Sprinkle on food

If you like the idea of taking AVB but are too lazy to cook (no offense, takeout lovers), don't worry! You can easily sprinkle AVB on any snack. Since it has already been decarboxylated during the vaping process, no additional steps are required before consumption.

For flavor reasons, it's highly recommended that you harden the beer in water beforehand. However, if you really prefer to take it easy, you can combine it with Nutella, peanut butter, barbecue sauce, hot sauce, or other highly seasoned foods to mask the flavor. It might not be the most glamorous use of AVB, but hey, some people still drink Bud Light, and it's not for the flavor.

Capsules

This is another method of direct ingestion without cooking, baking or water treatment. Using capsules offers several advantages, including discretion. You can easily swallow a capsule throughout the day, making it a subtle and convenient choice. Plus, you don't have to worry about the taste.

To use this method, purchase empty gel capsules and fill them with AVB. One disadvantage is that the effects may be delayed as it takes time for the capsules to break down and dissolve. For some, this may be an advantage, for others, a disadvantage. Either way, this method offers a simple and effective way to take your AVB.

coffee or tea

As mentioned, AVB has already been decarboxylated, so adding it to your morning coffee or tea is an easy way to get an energy boost. For coffee, simply add AVB to the grounds as you brew. We recommend adding strong coffee flavors like hazelnut or caramel, or even a dollop of butter (or hemp butter!) – these will all help mask the taste.

To make tea, add AVB to the tea leaves and let it steep. Choose a strong-flavored tea and add some honey or other sweeteners for more flavor. Of the two options, coffee may taste better, but by experimenting with flavors, AVB can pair well with both coffee and tea.

Since cannabinoids bind fat, it is also useful to add some milk or cream.

Coconut oil

Infusing with coconut oil is an easy way to use AVB, and it's especially effective because marijuana is fat-soluble—and coconut oil is rich in fat-soluble compounds.

Again, using the water curing method beforehand can enhance this method. To use this technique, add AVB and coconut oil to a slow cooker and let it sit on low heat for a few hours, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. When the mixture is ready, let it cool and then use cheesecloth to strain the oil from the plant material. Store the flavored oil in a cool, dark place.

Weed tincture

If you extract some cannabis oil from ABV weed, you can put it in a dropper bottle and use it as an AVB tincture, allowing you to carefully administer a few drops from the dropper bottle into your mouth when needed.

Technically you can smoke it

Okay, you're rebelling, we get it. You don't feel like cooking with it, you don't have the patience to brine it with water, and you don't want to mix it with your food. You have a pipe and a lighter handy and you're wondering: Can I smoke this stuff?

Well, the answer is yes, but don't blame us if your friends judge you. Smoking AVB may be a last resort as it doesn't match the potency of fresh flowers, the smoke can be acrid and the taste rivals accidentally inhaling shisha – but go ahead and give it a try, you brave rebel!

With so many uses for AVB, there's no reason to throw it away after you're done vaping! Experiment with some of the methods above to find what works best for you.
