Gary Chambers vows to tie President Biden to promises of legalization
A Louisiana native, he aims to bring cannabis to the forefront of America’s political landscape
In January, US Senate hopeful Gary Chambers Jr. caught the nation’s attention and ears by boldly smoking a blunt in his first commercial for the campaign. He contributed to the blazes weeks later by burning a Confederate flag in his next ad. But don’t think the Chambers Jr. platform is all about shock value. The substance behind his burning ideas shows up whenever he speaks.
Chambers Jr. recently stopped in Atlanta on a fundraiser trip and caught up with Leafly to discuss his run for the US Senate, his viral campaign ad, and his intention to push for state legalization if elected.

Because of this, Senate candidate Gary Chambers lit a blunt and went viral
Chambers Jr. already has a proven history of advocacy at ward and school board meetings. He drew attention to the deaths of Alton Sterling and Lamar Johnson in police custody. And he sees the prosperity that legal cannabis could bring to local economies across the country if used properly.
It’s about a lot. But Chambers has already proven he’s not afraid of heights with his forthrightly searing debut. Read on to meet the Senate hopefuls ready to take America’s complex weed problems to Washington.
On the inspiration behind his outspoken campaign ad
We chose to smoke a blunt in our first publicity for this US Senate race because people in the South are still going to jail for cannabis use. While in California, Illinois, now even Virginia, cannabis is legal. But in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, North/South Carolina, there are forms of legalization but not full federal legalization.
On the human cost of criminalizing cannabis
Blacks and whites use cannabis and the same measures. But black people are being punished for it on a higher level.
I will not say that I wanted to be in this work or that I aspired to do it. There was a problem in my community, I had a platform to address it. I use this platform to speak to her as well as what we are doing in this US Senate race.
We need people at the highest levels of this government to speak out on this issue. And we must be able to study and do research so that we can take advantage of the medicinal benefits of this plant.
How to keep President Biden on his campaign promise to legalize cannabis
The President said during his campaign that he would decriminalize cannabis at the federal level. I think we as a people, the Democratic Party, have to expect the President to be true to what he said as Candidate Biden and (as) President Biden.
As a US Senator, I would urge the President to do so immediately.
US Senate candidate Gary Chambers Jr. on federal legalization and deletions
That’s the bare minimum. This is the bottom of what we should do. We really should delete records at all levels and move them around. And make sure there’s some degree of fairness in terms of resources going around. Because at some point it will only be agriculture.

We (will) need your farm (points to a farmer in the barber shop) to get the same subsidy that the other farms get. That will really matter.
The moment this stuff is legal or unscheduled across the country, the people with the big pockets and the big resources will be the drivers of a new agribusiness in America.
Why he is needed in the Senate
There are problems in this country in this whole nation. And a US Senator can have a lot of power. You see Krysten Sinema, Senator from Arizona, and Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia. They have been repeatedly televised throughout the year to keep the President’s agenda going.
That lets you know that the issues we talk about can be mainstream when more of us are there in those positions of power. And we can move the needle on them.
If you’re invested in the fight to legalize cannabis at the federal level, follow Chambers Jr.’s progress in this year’s Senate race. Local experts currently give Chambers Jr. high odds. But some recognize that if it continues to resonate with voters, an underdog victory like Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez is on the table.
