Frankenstrain Cannabis Bud with 17% more THC, 25% more CBG and 30% more terpenes Created by an Israeli engineer
Israeli engineers are creating a novel new cannabis strain with more THC… and more terpenes too!!!
Israeli researchers see the potential of more THC and terpenes for cannabis’ healing properties.
Because of this, engineers at the University of Jerusalem were able to develop a new cannabis plant strain with 17% more THC and 25% more CBG. The team, led by Professor Alexander Vainstein from the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, managed to increase levels of cannabinoids and terpenes by 20-30%. The intention of this project was to “interfere with the biochemical pathways in the cannabis plant” and ultimately change how active compounds are produced, reports JPost.com.
“This represents an innovative use of these tools constructed with synthetic biology tools,” he said. “Next, we developed an innovative technology based on infection with an artificial virus to facilitate chemical reactions that increase the amount of the desired substances. In collaboration with Mariana Bioscience Ltd. we examined infected plants and found that the levels of the substances in question had actually increased,” explains Vainstein.
They were able to do this by playing with a neutralized active virus found in cannabis. “We examined the infected plants and found that the levels of the substances in question actually increased,” the researchers write. “These study results will be valuable both for industry to increase the yield of active compounds and for medical research to cultivate and develop new strains for medicinal cannabis users,” says Vainstein.
It is the first time that researchers have succeeded in such an experiment.
Before that, there was no known way for anyone to tailor the cannabinoids or other botanicals within the plant.
Fast growing medical marijuana market in Israel
According to cannabis industry analytics firm Prohibition Partners, Israel’s medicinal cannabis market was worth approximately $264 million in 2021. Several cannabis and biotech startups with marijuana-based medical products have seen tremendous growth in recent months, and it’s only expected to go green for Israel.
Last month, the Department of Agriculture released a statement saying that cannabis seeds from local plant company BetterSeeds were being exported to the United States, marking the first time seeds had ever been exported. US companies will then analyze the seed for marketability in America, although it is expected that further exports will follow in the near future. This is another important step for Israel to position itself as a pioneer in the global cannabis market, especially considering that the necessary steps to get here took about a year.
“Israel has the ability to make a name for itself in the industry and to be among the world leaders,” said Agriculture Minister Oded Forer. “The export of cannabis seeds invites us to expand the diversity of Israeli agricultural exports and strengthen local agriculture,” he said in the statement. Furthermore, these efforts “exploit Israel’s relative advantage in an area that is still considered tentative.”
“Expanding export offerings and expanding into cannabis products will allow for deepening of existing markets and penetration of new ones while riding the growing wave of demand for cannabis products with medicinal and health value,” the statement continued.
Unsurprisingly, Israel is destined to become the global pioneer in medicinal cannabis; Finally, Raphael Mechoulam, also known as the godfather of THC, first isolated the famous psychoactive compound in the plant in the 1960s. Even then, the Israelis were researching the medicinal properties of the plant, and Mechoulam was one of the best known.
Aside from isolating THC, he was responsible for helping to discover the existence of the endocannabinoid system. Among his other notable discoveries is the fact that the human brain makes its own cannabinoids, which stimulate our very own receptor system. Mechoulam’s research opened the doors to the study of medicinal cannabis worldwide.
Even their laws were more advanced compared to other countries, and they were among the first countries to legalize the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes. By the early 1990s, it was already legal for patients with Parkinson’s disease, Crohn’s disease, and cancer to use medical marijuana.
Israel is also home to Tikun Olam, the country’s largest MMJ supplier and one of the largest MMJ companies in the world. They have already developed almost 230 of their own cannabis strains. Meanwhile, numerous startups are focused on making marijuana more accessible through dispensary prescriptions, which they can do with government support. International cannabis companies are also making their mark on the Israeli marijuana landscape.
However, recreational cannabis is still illegal in Israel. But because Israel is so fertile for the growth of medical marijuana companies, it’s home to a huge concentration of startups and companies focused solely on developing therapeutic products for the sick, all made from compounds derived from the cannabis plant. Successful startups, particularly in the tech space, have long been a strength of Israelis thanks to the presence of numerous private investors and investment funds.
Additionally, the country as a whole is committed to medical research, with many of the biggest breakthroughs in recent years coming from the Holy Land. According to Michael Dor, chief medical adviser for the Department of Health’s Medical Marijuana Division, there are over 110 clinical trials currently underway. It is certainly the only country that has the most clinical studies analyzing the benefits of cannabis. Many of these are also subsidized by the Israeli government (while there is still much to be desired in the United States).
With all of these breakthroughs in Israel, they are undoubtedly the most powerful cannabis pioneer in the world.
