Collect yourselves, earthlings. Leafly landed the world’s first look at the new strain collaboration between Erykah Badu’s Apple Trees and Cookies Cannabis. See what That Badu looks like, how it smokes and where to find it on March 8th.

Erykah Badu’s history as a cannabis advocate is documented in songs like “On and On,” which the artist wrote with the help of Mary Jane. This Women’s Month, Badu’s cannabis company Apple Trees will be collaborating with Cookies Cannabis to launch That Badu, a strain packed with cannabinoids that cater to the needs of women. The Drop will be available exclusively at all Cookies and Lemonnade stores in California starting March 8th to celebrate International Women’s Day. Eighths are $60 and pre-rolls are $12.

“The herb is for everyone, but we had women in mind,” Badu told Leafly in February. “[We want] to advance the conversation about women’s studies on cannabinoids. [I’m] an advocate using the plant as a medicine in my ritual work, my spiritual work, my art, my creativity. I also use it for my birth mothers as a doula. A doula is a person who helps babies get through.”

Here’s what Badu and the Cookies team shared with Leafly about the exciting new drop.

“It’s a combination of cannabinoids in two different strains: limoncello [aka Lemonchello] and Jet Fuel Gelato,” Badu told Leafly of the self-titled parent release. The strain was grown by Mad Cow Genetics, and Cookies CEO Berner said he kept the genetics in anticipation of the right opportunity.

Badu’s parent, Limoncello 10, is a cross between the original Lemonnade and the all-time great Cookies Hitter Cherry Pie. Berner said the Jet Fuel Gelato genetics from That Badu’s other parent add a unique punch to the wide array of fruity flavors.

“It’s a very delicate plant. The growers didn’t enjoy growing as much as I enjoyed smoking her. It really is something special. It is unlike anything currently on the market. It has that lemonnade, that cherry pie smell.”

Berner

After smoking That Badu, Berner said, “This thing kicks your ass. It’s super funky, super strong. I’m really glad she chose this one. When we sat down and talked about working together, she said she wanted something that would stand out. Something euphoric, something special. I put about four or five things in front of her and she chose that. It’s something I’ve been holding on to for a while.”

Badu recommends the strain for moms and women who want to stay productive and alert. “It’s really beautiful and natural, like a ballad,” she said in a YouTube clip promoting the strain. “It just makes you want to move slightly and it kind of gets you through the day without being zoomed in.” But she adds that the magical effects can be enjoyed by anyone.

What made Erykah Badu choose Berner as her cannabis partner?

“First of all, he’s a wacky MC and I love his music. I’m part of his cult following. But it wasn’t like he was a b-boy [and] i am a b girl It wasn’t. Then I tasted his weed and I saw his presentation in his labs and stuff, but it wasn’t. It was the fact that he was so open and friendly with me. For someone entering this field, which was obviously a very competitive field, he gave with his words, his studies, his contacts – he was just a complete plug. It created that comfort for me. He’s my mentor and guides me through the humble beginnings of my journey as a breeder, as a connoisseur, as an advocate, as an activist, you know? So that’s it. It was his kindness and his beauty as a person.”

“Berner reached out years ago and I just wasn’t ready for it,” Badu told The Breakfast Club last week. “He held out his hand. And I said I think it’s time to do that. It struck me that there isn’t an area in the cannabinoid world that women focus on. So my focus is on women studies in the body, childbirth, meditation, religious studies, spirituality, casual, mothers, everyday people and building a product line that meets their needs.”

That Badu will also feature merchandise, accessories and a line of mushroom teas featuring adaptogenic mushrooms for functional use with your morning tea or coffee, as well as magic mushrooms for those who want to get trippy.

Here’s what Crystal Millican, Head of Retail at Cookies, had to say about working with Erykah Badu:

“Erykah Badu is a woman who creates the world on her own terms. Fearlessly herself, the consummate collaborator, she soulfully breathes life into every effort she makes, be it through her music, her fashion, delivering babies as a doula and now her new line of cannabis and wellness products. Badu charts another path into the cannabis and wellness space, where women all too often feel unrepresented, unheard and invisible. Badu has been driving the conversation about women’s wellbeing for years and is the female advocate cannabis companies should take notes from. It felt right to launch the strain she curated with such care (“That Badu”) for all to enjoy during the month of March, dedicated to the women who are transforming our lives and to those like Badu, whose posts make it clear that a woman can pursue any dream while staying true to her inner voice.”

According to the Cookies team, Badu was fully immersed in the R&D process. Millican added that “evolving [Badu’s] product line has been a labor of love like no other for the Cookies Family. She spent some time at our growing facilities dealing with the seed-to-sale process. She conducted multiple tastings to determine the desired effect, experience, and flavor of her products.” Cookies said Badu ultimately chose this particular strain because she felt it “elevated your spirits and you would help get through the day.”

Badu says the terpenes are infused with “ancestors who will whisper in your ear, stop my child.” And the Cookies team said, “Her passion goes beyond the product itself as she spends countless hours with our creative team, to design artworks, packaging, clothing, merchandise and experiences that embody the vibration, energy and moment Badu is dying to share in her cannabis adventure.”
