Fireworks and Pets: Can Marijuana or CBD Help?

The 4th of July is a big celebration with BBQs, parties, drinks, red/white/blue clothing and fireworks. While most people enjoy the fourth day, dogs, cats, and other pets find it annoying. One study estimated that 45 percent of dogs show signs of fear when hearing fireworks, and a New Zealand survey found that 79 percent of horses were either fearful or very fearful around fireworks

According to PetAmberAlert.com, animal shelters are seeing a 30% increase in missing pets between July 4th and 6th, with July 5th being one of the busiest days for shelters. The poor things are afraid of the load and the unpredictable booms. Can Marijuana or CBD Help?

CBD is a resounding yes, cannabis more of a no. Due to the THC content, giving marijuana to pets is strongly discouraged. Pets have more cannabinoid receptors in their brains, meaning the effects of cannabis and THC are more dramatic and potentially toxic compared to humans.

CBD contains no THC and can provide relief without the intoxication. A CBD for pets is recommended because the dosage is geared towards a pet’s size rather than a person’s size.

One method of giving cannabis to your pet is to use CBD oil and rub it into their ears. CBD-infused treats won’t get pets high, but they can relieve stress. However, you must consume them at least 40 minutes before the start of the fireworks/noise.

The following general suggestions are good for pets.

  • Stay indoors: Try to keep your pet indoors as much as possible. Ideally, someone stays home with your pet.
  • Make them feel safe: Comfort your pets by petting them, hugging them, speaking to them in a soothing voice, giving them a treat and staying close if possible. Make sure they have access to their crate or “safe place”.
  • Avoid the noise. Try to drown out the sounds of the fireworks as much as possible by closing the windows, playing music, or turning on the TV.
  • act normal Your pet is guided by the actions of you and your family. Go about your normal routine as much as possible, talking and playing with your pet as usual.

Hope everyone in your family has a great 4th birthday this year!
