The food you eat is incredibly helpful for a variety of things from your waistline to your heart health. A new study found that eating nuts several times a week can help people live longer.
The study, published in the journal Nutrients, was conducted by a group of Harvard researchers who found that consuming five or more servings of walnuts a week helped people extend their lives by an average of 1.3 years. A closer look showed that eating walnuts reduced people’s risk of death by 14 percent and their risk of dying from heart disease by 25 percent.

While nuts have always been associated with a healthier lifestyle, they are usually seen as beneficial when combined with healthy habits. However, the study showed that eating walnuts alone has positive effects on people’s health. For example, the study showed that people who did poorly eat had benefits from eating walnuts because they had a 12 percent lower risk of death and a 26 percent lower risk of death from heart disease.
The lead researcher of the research, Dr. Yanping Li said walnuts could be used for people who want to eat healthier food. “What we learned from this study is that even a few handfuls of walnuts per week can help promote longevity, especially in those whose nutritional quality is not so good at first.”
