“Easier When I’m Stoned” by Cowboy Diplomacy

“Easier When I’m Stoned” is the latest single from the four-piece alternative blues rock band Cowboy Diplomacy. The track ponders the break with reality that getting stoned offers – and as we approach the final months of 2021, I think we all need a break. As Cowboy Diplomacy says, “The real world is tough”.

“Easier When I’m Stoned” has a dreamy, poignant sound with a country twang. With exactly four minutes and twenty seconds, Cowboy Diplomacy brings all the self-confidence of a Trevor Moore WKUK-era classic with the credibility of every Black Keys B-side.

Lead singer Ian Cochran begins with a question, “Have you ever felt like you were drowning in reality?” If there was ever a motto for the past year, well it probably is. It’s almost like Jon Mess, but it resonates. The reality is extremely overwhelming at times, to the point where a break from our responsibilities and problems for our health is necessary.

I think we are all aware of the dangers of numbing the pain too much. Cochran knows that too. It’s a little more innocent than getting lost in the crisp aisle of a bodega than in a bottle. He emphasizes that this interval is only “provisional”. The dream cannot and will not last forever.

Cowboy Diplomacy’s “Easier When I’m Stoned” reminds us that an escape from reality doesn’t have to be so extreme as to be harmful. It can also be a useful breather on a tough day.

It may not be a coincidence that the song, with its lullaby quality and soothing sound, feels like taking a deep breath. It reassures the listener that you can leave your worries behind and take a moment to indulge in a daydream and let your mind wander – even just to the refrigerator.
