Drinking makes people happier, study results

Coffee moves the world, doesn’t it? If you believe this statement, you’ll be amazed by a new study that found that coffee can actually add to happiness. This is where things get a little weird: The study is backed by the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee, whose members include coffee companies Lavazza and illy, so they may be a little biased.

European researchers conducted a survey and found that coffee is responsible for relieving seasonal depression.

Over 5,000 adults from Finland, Germany, Italy, Poland and the UK were surveyed, with most reporting that coffee lifts their spirits, even in winter when there is less daylight. Respondents said this change in weather and natural light made it difficult for them to focus and exercise. They also reported having increased levels of sadness and depression during this time of year.

The majority of respondents said the main reason they drank coffee was to increase their energy levels. The second most common reason for consuming coffee was to increase concentration and improve emotions and mood.

Researchers cited previous results that support this theory. You mentioned previous compounds found in studies where coffee is responsible for boosting neurogenesis, thus preventing cognitive and mood disorders.

To maximize the benefits of coffee, experts recommend waiting around an hour after you wake up to have your cup of coffee. They explain that waiting for this time allows your body to naturally wake up using cortisol, the stress hormone it naturally produces when you wake up. Once that hour is up, coffee can lift your mood when your body needs it most, while also preventing too much caffeine from overworking your system.
