DoorDash morphs into DoobieDash as the driver delivers weed with a burger and fries and gets fired immediately
DoorDash is in the news this week due to an unimaginable bug in one of its drivers. This driver’s actions have led to his termination as an employee of the respected delivery company DoorDash. DoorDash reportedly did this to immediately quash discussions that suggested they were supporting their driver’s actions.
What happened?
A few days ago, a DoorDash customer from Ohio received an unexpected insert when receiving their order. He found an unwanted pack of cannabis in his order. The customer, who wished to remain anonymous in this case, called the relevant authorities to complain. He said he was immediately very startled when he noticed the bag of weed in the lunch box.
He said the delivery driver returned to his home after delivery to reclaim the weed “at rock bottom”. He told reporters that the dasher had claimed the package contained medicine for his friend. But he chose to call the police and file a complaint with the police rather than return the pot to the driver.
The customer ordered the food on August 9th via the DoorDash platform and the food was delivered soon enough with more than what they expected. The man explained that his fear was short-lived as nothing about the strange incident came as a surprise. During his testimony, he produced a picture of the food package, which contained his food, cutlery and the cannabis package.
The contraband in the package was about a gram of cannabis packaged in a sachet with alien heads on it. The customer asked if the fault was solely the driver’s or was probably a fault of the clerk he ordered the food from. He emphasized that it has been a stressful and frightening experience, especially because as a healthcare worker he sees the impact of cannabis addiction on the people in his workplace.
The man went on to explain that he has a close friend who lost his nephew to indiscriminate use of cannabis and fentanyl. The victim had unknowingly consumed fentanyl-laced marijuana. according to dr WebMD’s Peter Grinspoon and Snopes are wrong in most claims about fentanyl-laced cannabis. He also pointed out that fentanyl breaks down immediately after incineration.
The customer added that it is very worrying that cannabis could have fallen into the wrong hands. A child could have received the package. He also noted that the event made him question how well delivery companies like DoorDash screen their drivers. He concluded by noting that he is now reluctant to order food as the event has cast so many doubts about the delivery.
DoorDash response
In a public statement, a DoorDash spokesperson said the company does not tolerate such actions. He mentioned that the dashers have since been fired and removed from their platform. The representative added that the company appreciates both negative and positive feedback and thanked the customer for reporting this incident.
The DoorDash spokesperson went on to explain that when he thinks about the incident, thoughts of his children, nephews, colleagues and even grandchildren come to mind. He doesn’t want them to be exposed to such cannabis products
In addition, DoorDash’s instant response to the client proved that they do not condone such actions. In an e-mail to the customer, the company indicated that customers do not take the risk of being supplied with future orders in this way.
In addition, the company has updated its background check policy. All DoorDash delivery drivers, popularly known as dashers, are now required to submit a criminal background check and DMV before they can be hired.
DoorDash Cannabis Policy
DoorDash isn’t currently involved in cannabis delivery, although they’ve been toying with the idea for a while.
In 2018, CEO Tony Xu revealed at the Brainstorm Tech Conference that the company had considered diving into the cannabis industry supply niche. He explained that there are no concrete plans yet. However, the company had begun to develop a strategy for how to begin cannabis delivery operations in Canada.
Mr. Tony Xu clarified on the spot that supplying cannabis is not one of the company’s priorities. He explained that US cannabis laws have led to many complications with payments, which is why the company prefers to launch such a project in Canada rather than the United States. Since then, however, the company has delved into the federally legal cannabis market in Canada. However, deliveries are not yet included in the calculation.
