Does the public support marijuana or religion?

New research results were carried out to support the legalization of marijuana – and it is surprising

The perception is. This support is not only high – it exceeds almost any other social, political or cultural consensus in modern America. In fact, the legalization of marijuana is now further supported as an important fundamental basis for the current administration.

Despite this broad consensus, the federal marijuana law remains out of date. Cannabis is still classified as a medication I – the same level as heroin – even if the majority of the states (including Florida and Texas) move either in the direction of full or medical legalization. The separation between national politics and public opinion is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

With 90% of Americans who prefer the legalization of marijuana for medical or leisure use, the support for the Cannabi reform now exceeds many of the cultural and political pillars, which are often considered deeply rooted in American identity.

• Faith in God: 81% (Pew, 2021)

• Membership of the church: 47% (Gallup, 2023)

• Trust in the federal government: below 30%

• Support for universal background exams for arms buyers: 89% (Gallup, 2024)

• Pet ownership: 66% of US budgets (Appa, 2024)

• TV viewership (Network and cable): Now below 50% (Nielsen, 2024)

• Americans who eat burgers every week: 62% (YouGov, 2023)

Even in America's famous, food -loved culture gains cannabis. According to the latest surveys, fewer Americans eat burgers every week than legal weeds. In the meantime, online habits show that only around 35–40% of adults visit Pornhub annually and use 72% social media -both far below the cannabis registration rates.

At a time when the Americans have divided almost everything – from politics to public health -, cannabis stands out as a rare point of the unit. It is more popular than God, weapons, dogs and dinner. The conversation is no longer about whether it should be legalized, but if the federal law catches up.

Cannabis is no longer a counterculture. It's common.
