Does hit TV show ‘The Last of Us’ spread fear of fungi and cordyceps?

The Last of Us spreads a fear of mushrooms

The truth about cordyceps and what you need to know about a mushroom zombie apocalypse

Spoiler Alert!!!

For anyone watching the latest apocalypse drama on HBO’s The Last of Us, it’s easy to get carried away that mushrooms may actually be causing the next pandemic.

After all, we barely recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, which none of us ever saw coming. Many still firmly believe the theory that this was caused by pathogenic viruses that evolved from people eating wild animals in China. Now it’s easy to believe that anything else is possible, including fungi evolving to take over our bodies. To the right?

Meet Cordyceps

The cordyceps mushroom is a true species of mushroom. It has been known to infect the bodies of beetles, particularly ants, and others including spiders. Once infected, the fungus turns them into zombies because it takes over their bodies without killing them.

Cordyceps live and thrive in subtropical and tropical forests around the world. There are many different species of Cordyceps as well as Ophiocordyceps out there.

For those who have been in the health scene for a while, hearing about Cordyceps is nothing new. Many are already taking Cordyceps to boost energy and immunity, as well as reduce inflammation.

Nature is indeed metal.

In addition, Cordyceps is commonly consumed by people in real life. These edible mushrooms have been cultivated for medicinal purposes for thousands of years and are typically used to promote well-being. Many even consume cordyceps supplements as they are classified as functional fungi or adaptogens, a type of plant or fungus that helps the human body respond more effectively to fatigue, stress or anxiety.

Other popular adaptogenic mushrooms include reishi, chaga, turkey tail, shiitake, and lion’s mane, to name a few. They all play an important role in the ecosystem. Even when Cordyceps infects ants, it’s thought to control them by releasing a specific chemical that binds to receptors in the invertebrate’s nervous system, causing them to behave in ways they don’t normally do.

But the truth is that Cordyceps mushrooms simply would not be able to thrive in the human body. Human physiology, even the temperature we maintain inside, is very different from that of ants. In the worst case, let’s assume that the fungus has successfully infected a human. Our physiology doesn’t have what it takes for the fungus’ chemicals to fully take over the human body as it has evolved over the millennia to do so in ants and other insects.

In addition, it is simply not scientifically plausible that the infection could spread from ants to humans.

However, keep in mind that the show is pure fiction. And it should be enjoyed in this way, without fear that these mushrooms will infect humans.

The Last of Us put an interesting twist on the fury that currently surrounds Mushrooms. In particular, psilocybin or magic mushrooms have become hugely popular in recent years due to their remarkable healing properties. Psychedelic Magic Mushrooms are no longer considered an enemy: Mushrooms are now used for all types of healing.

People from all walks of life can now benefit from using magic mushrooms to treat treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders and more. Thanks to psilocybin, which is nothing short of a miraculous compound, people can start living a new life — no longer tied to the struggles of mental health disorders. In addition, many

There is no doubt that we are living in the midst of a mushroom boom.

Mushrooms won’t infect us and turn us into zombies, but they will help humanity in ways we never thought possible either.

Adaptogens and psilocybin mushrooms can be consumed in many forms to support mental and physical health. In fact, certain types of mushrooms, like turkey tail, even have the potential to treat certain cancers.

Mushrooms are fascinating!

Did you know that humans share almost half of our genetic makeup with fungi? Therefore, we are actually susceptible to the same biological problems and diseases as they are. The difference is that fungi have successfully evolved survival tools over the centuries to help them evolve. And that’s why we can benefit from medication with mushrooms: They possess immune-boosting compounds found nowhere else.
