Do you travel with weed? Here are some tips for the 2023 season

In more states, more people are enjoying cannabis legalization than ever before. The disadvantage? A patchwork of state and federal laws and regulations for trains, planes, and automobiles.

As America has had a record travel year, Leafly is here to keep up with the changes. Hear our updated rules for driving the road or flying with grass in 2023 in this interview with KCRW, the Los Angeles affiliate of National Public Radio.

“A lot of people take personal amounts of cannabis on domestic flights,” I told KCRW.

Do not violate federal or state laws. Check out the laws here.

Know the legal limits

In California, you’re allowed to carry up to one ounce. More than that can have consequences. Airport security is left to the local police, who will enforce state law.

Mockers should avoid attention

Airport security focuses on finding guns and bombs, not your bombweed. Avoid bagging jars, metal grinders, or liquids larger than a few ounces — all of which draw the attention of airport screeners at TSA. Packing too much shampoo, for example, can result in a bag search and the found marijuana being dragged in.

Vapes on the plane

Smart travelers pack e-cigarettes in their carry-on luggage. E-cigarette batteries in checked baggage will be confiscated due to fire hazard. They get arrested for smoking in airports and on planes. So stay away until you arrive at your destination.

Respect international borders

Cannabis remains illegal in Mexico and other states. Transporting across borders can ruin your trip. Of course, don’t bring THC to Russia or Singapore.

On the go – pack the THC in the trunk

The law is similar to alcohol: Open containers will get you in trouble. Unopened bags of weed in the trunk are legal in the legalizing states. You don’t want a half-burned joint on the dash.

Obey all traffic rules

Avoid speeding or hyping traffic with weed in the car. The smell alone is no longer a likely reason to search a car. However, the behavior of the driver could trigger further questions.

Respect state borders

Prohibition states like Idaho will arrest you for a vape cart legal in California. Pay attention to the map.
