Do redheads need more weed to get high?

In case you didn’t know, people with red hair need more anesthetics than people with brown hair. As this one study found;

Age and body temperature change the need for inhalation anesthetics; however, no human genotype is associated with the need for an inhalational anesthetic. There is anecdotal evidence that redheads have an increased need for anesthetics. In addition, red hair results from different mutations in the melanocortin-1 receptor. So, we tested the hypothesis that the need for the volatile anesthetic desflurane is greater in naturally red-haired women than in dark-haired women.

The conclusion;

Red hair appears to be a specific phenotype related to the need for anesthetics in humans and can also be attributed to a specific genotype

This made me wonder if redheads need more anesthesia for surgeries, if the same would apply to cannabis. Unfortunately there isn’t much scientific literature when it comes to getting redheads stoned, but I suppose the next best thing would be to hear from other redheads who are stoners.

This thread from Grass City was started by a redhead looking for the exact same answer;

I’m redheaded and have smoked weed with friends on a few occasions and I always seem to be disappointed with the effects. I got slightly high a few times, but that’s about it. I don’t usually feel much. This has always annoyed me, and I recently stumbled across an article that may have some relevance. Apparently, redheads need more anesthesia than non-redheads before having surgery. So about 20% more. In general, over-the-counter medications have little effect on me either. Caffeine doesn’t bother me either.

So my question to the redheads on GC – does weed have a big impact on you? is it just me

While some of the responses to this question were simply that other stoners encouraged the OP to keep going until they got the desired effect, one person pointed out that weed isn’t like an anesthetic. However, cannabis can affect anesthesia, and the fact that cannabis and opioids interact on different parts of the brain does not mean that there is no interaction between substances. Therefore, while anesthetics are distinct from cannabis, cannabis and the endocannabinoid system play a significant role in virtually every major bodily function.

Eventually, other people began reporting their observations of the phenomenon;

My friend who I got into smoking and who always smokes with me is a redhead and he gets beaten up worse than anyone I know. About 30 seconds after a hit, it hits him like a shitton of bricks. It is ridiculous. And his eyes get so red and so saggy they look closed after just taking a few hits. So yeah, not to burst your bubble or anything, but in my experience it’s always been the exact opposite.

Eventually, other redheads began offering their perspectives on the dilemma.

I’m redheaded and I have no problem getting high. Try smoking more or inhaling more smoke with each puff. I’ve never really known anyone who wasn’t influenced by weed, but I know people who smoke a lot more than I do to get as high.

Another redhead seemed to confirm the idea that redheads might be more sensitive to cannabis;

I am a redhead. I’m very sensitive to marijuana, and not only that… but also caffeine and a lot of other things. I smoke a bowl and sometimes I’m wasted for an hour more.

Of course, all of these experiences are subjective in nature. We cannot say if there is a statistical difference between the perceived “highness” and the amount of cannabis use in relation to the redness of one’s hair.

But just as there is evidence that redheads are more susceptible to cannabis, there are others who say the opposite;

I’m a redhead and it always seemed like I had a naturally high tolerance for weed. Even after a long break from T, my tolerance is still very high

Once again, this seems to indicate that there is no hard and fast rule of thumb as to whether redheads require more or less cannabis to achieve the same high. Maybe the hair color has nothing to do with it. Perhaps we are exposing cannabis to a wider population of consumers and we find that certain genetics may make you immune to the high of certain drugs.

I know a guy who took LSD and told me throughout the experience that “he didn’t really feel it” and that it just “felt like he smoked weed and drank weed”. In my LSD-infused state, I could only conclude that he must be a Neanderthal descendant and that part of his brain had evolved differently and was not allowing the LSD to unfold.

On the other hand, subjectively, he could very well have convinced himself that he wasn’t tripping over testicles out of an innate fear of losing control of his reality. Maybe it was all just a defense mechanism to stay in control. Still, my friend wasn’t a redhead, but seemed impervious to the effects of LSD.

However, I doubt anyone would seriously fund a study on redheads who smoke weed to see if weed affects them any differently – but it sure would be hilarious if they did. However, there are some people who seem to have a naturally high tolerance to weed, which could point to certain anatomical traits bypassing the euphoria of THC – which might be worth investigating scientifically.

Whether we ever know the answer to the weed and redheads question, there’s a larger discussion we could have as a collective community about how cannabis affects us personally.

But now if you are a redhead reading this…what is your take on it. Does weed get you high easier or is it almost impossible to get stoned?
