DIY stoner sheds and why stoners love them
Many stoners head outside for a hit because it’s impractical for them to turn a living room, den, or basement into a cute, vibrant sesh room. The ultimate stoner hangout doesn’t have to be limited to your home, however.
But that doesn’t mean we have to be at the mercy of the elements when we’re out there.
Enterprising cannabis enthusiasts have found a way to safely indulge in comfort and style. We introduce you to the “pothead shed” where there are no limits to your imagination. A party palace, a meditation oasis, a place to train – these rooms are what excites and inspires each individual.
Leafly spoke to proud stoners who have turned their sheds and garages into dedicated session spaces because the wind, rain, and snow of the weather can turn prime weed into misery.
A stoner shed can be anything you want it to be
“You can do this wherever you want,” suggests Twitter friend @420iloveweed. “My first place was half garage, half meeting room. Being in a shed is great. I have many friends who have sheds that they remodeled.
A buddy, everyone [his shed] This is a poker table, a fireplace, a TV and a dart board. It’s a great place. You just want a good place to hang out with your buddies and everyone is just chilled.”

Smoking next to the lawnmower or the car may be the easiest and cheapest solution, in the name of creature comfort, these safe havens offer the space that smoking cannabis deserves.
“Basically everyone I knew always smoked in their sheds, but they were always full of tools. I wanted a nicer place for us all to be,” explains @the_plant_that_did of her shesh-to-sesh shed makeover role on TikTok.
Moderately decorated with mood lighting, a dance floor and a couch, @the_plant_that_did Sesh Shed is more of a cannabis vapor lounge than Trailer Park Boy Bubbles hanging out with his kitties. It’s a spacious sesh shed, he explains, “I had about 14 people for my birthday the other night!”
A big motivator for building these meeting rooms, especially for parents ducking outside for a doobie, is to keep cannabis away from their kids.
Sheds vary in size and price, but they all serve the same function of protecting accessories from the weather and children. The only tools in a stoner barn should be those needed for an epic session: comfortable seating, rotating trays, bongs, vaporizers, rolling papers, ashtrays, and possibly a flat screen or gaming unit.
Note: It is very important to buy a good lock as thieves have been known to break open garden sheds with hydraulics if they are not anchored (especially if they are filled with weed gear).
Regardless of the decorating budget, the Sesh Shed is a personal statement of your love for cannabis. @the_plant_that_did suggests, “Try to be creative, use lots of color and it can be fun to use random items for decoration in the shed.”
With a budget of CDN 50,000, half funded by his brother, @420iloveweed transformed a cinder block garage with a tin door into an impossibly dreamy boardroom. Not all stoner sheds need a big budget renovation, but this decorated shack was worth the investment.
Your ganja garage is soundproof, insulated, heated and air conditioned. “We arched the ceiling and installed pot lights. We have two smoke vents controlled by fans and a huge ceiling fan if it gets too smoky. We have a pool table, two fridges, turntables, big screen TV, WiFi and PS4. Our bongs, water pipes, although we mostly roll joints.”
“This is exactly what I wanted!” @420iloveweed exclaims from his garage conversion weed lounge, “I don’t smoke anywhere else! I’m in the garage 80% of the time.”
A big motivator for this dream session space, and for many people who duck outside for a doobie, is keeping cannabis away from their kids. “I have a 17-year-old who lives with me fifty percent of the time,” he explains.
“I never smoke weed indoors, but it also gives me a place to go that is my private space. I can be out here, take a few hits, and watch a movie with him later. It allows us to have a comfortable lifestyle where he is not exposed to weed. He’s too young for that.”
The environment plays a crucial role in enjoying cannabis, smoking outdoors in the middle of winter is not a suitable environment. “It’s not comfortable,” agrees @420iloveweed when it comes to being outside during those chilly Canadian winters.
“People go outside for a few minutes while I’m out here for an hour or more. The only negative would be cleaning up after a night of drinking in the shed, but it’s always a lot of fun. Hahaha.”
The Sesh Shed isn’t just a sanctuary from the elements, it’s an environment that enhances the overall enjoyment of weed by showcasing a niche passion of the cannabis subculture.
In a legal world, a session room is the equivalent of a superfan decorating a room in team colors, or a 70’s basement bar with wood paneling. For cannabis users who can’t have space within the walls of their home, a sesh shed is just as great.
