Dip Devices Lunar Review: Everything to know

Dip Devices specialize in portable vaporizers that combine the potency of modern dab rigs with the no-fuss ease of a vape pen. The Denver-based company is best known for its dippers, contemporary interpretations of old-school dab straws, and its commitment to philanthropy – each product donates 1% of its sales to another non-profit organization.

Dip Devices’ latest product, the Lunar, is another reimagining of a dab straw, albeit one indistinguishable from a typical 510-thread vape pen. The most discreet of all dip devices, the Lunar works with ease, much like an e-rig and everyday vape pen.

At a relatively friendly price of $30, this is a bargain, especially considering how easily it fits in a back pocket. Here’s everything you need to know about the Lunar Vaporizer.

What is the Lunar Vaporizer?

The Lunar is a sleek, customizable dab straw that borrows its aesthetic from the ubiquitous vape batteries you’ll find at your local pharmacy. The pen/straw is top-loading and is capped by a mouthpiece that feels more intended for personal use than pass-through, and while the atomizer is attached with a 510 thread, the device isn’t compatible with cartridges.

The Lunar is available in five different shades, and sales of each color benefit an affiliated charity, so buyers can not only decide which color they like best, but which organization they want to support the most. This charitable model, along with the cleverly constructed and thought out dab units, is enough to keep Dip Devices on the radar of many justice-minded dab enthusiasts, including my own.

How does the Lunar vaporizer work?

Although the Lunar is visually indistinguishable from a standard button-activated vape pen, once activated the differences are clear. To use the Lunar, you must slide the mouthpiece off the head of the device to reveal the atomizer. Once the mouthpiece is removed and the atomizer is fully visible, load the dab directly into the heating chamber, slide the mouthpiece back into place, click the power button 5 times to activate it, then hold the same button down, while you take a train.

The atomizer is not an empty titanium shell, but contains two quartz rods surrounded by coils. You are meant to simply drop your concentrates into the chamber without avoiding or aiming at the quartz rods. During testing, we found that our hits were more likely to stick to the walls of the chamber than choke out a heating element.

The instructions warn against overfilling the device – the bowl could potentially hold a gram or more of concentrate at a time – and not turning the device upside down during use, as the open-ended atomizer would simply pour liquefied concentrate through the mouthpiece .

The Lunar works with three different heating options: low, medium and high and turns itself off after about five minutes of non-use.

Assembly

The Lunar consists of three critical elements: the battery, the atomizer, and the mouthpiece.

The mouthpiece detaches from the device and is held in place by tension, while the atomizer attaches to the battery via a 510 thread. The battery contains the charging port and a power button that glows green when activated before transitioning to a color that reflects the temperature of the device. Overall, the device is easy to assemble and disassemble and works as both a vape pen and an inclusive e-rig.

There are only the most basic instructions on the box and there is no instruction manual with the device. However, it was easy enough to use without figuring out a multi-page guide, and basically the device is up and running after a quick charging session – once drained, a full charge was achieved in less than an hour.

Change temperature and charge Lunar

You can switch between low, medium and high temperatures by triple clicking the power button once the device is activated. The temperature options are differentiated by color:

  • Green: low temperature
  • Combination green/red/yellow: medium temperature
  • Red: high temperature

The Lunar is charged via a micro-USB port located mid-length of the battery.

Note: The device arrives alone in its packaging and no cables or power adapters are included.

cleaning

To clean the Lunar Vaporizer, unscrew the atomizer and dip it in isopropyl alcohol, then blot with a cotton swab to remove baked-on dab residue. The mouthpiece can also be easily wiped off or washed more thoroughly with soap and warm water.

Under no circumstances should you soak the battery to clean it. Instead, wipe down the case and be careful not to leave out the charging port and power button.

What’s the appeal?

Discretion is the main appeal of this unit. While other dab straws can be more of a spectacular handful, this one works much like a regular vape pen. Plus, every purchase benefits a cause worth supporting, and you can choose from several nonprofits and charities when shopping.

Finally, the uncomplicated function delivers a potent dab with minimal setup compared to more complex e-rigs and straws. For what appears to be a relatively low price, the Lunar delivers some pretty loud dabs considering the discreet unit that vaporized them.

Bottom line, this device is very appealing to both daily on-the-go dabbers and the occasional concentrate cannaseur who hasn’t yet decided to make a full investment in an e-rig.
