December 2023 Leafly HighLight: Lemon Cherry Gelato variety
Deck the halls with Lemon Cherry Gelato – this berry, creamy, fuel-smelling indica hybrid became a crowd favorite in 2023 and is now our Leafly HighLight for December.
To get straight to the point: Lemon Cherry Gelato is not Leaf Variety of the Year 2023. We will announce the winner on Tuesday, December 5th.
But LCG has definitely had one hell of a year, so it felt right to highlight it for our monthly spotlight, Leafly HighLight. LCG has been around since 2016 and is now the #4 strain in the US. It started as number 3 in New York, took the number one spot in May 2023 and has remained there ever since. In Cali it's second after I started fifth.
Promoted by LA crew Backback Boyz from a bag of Connected brand Gelato #33, LCG is a coastal subway thing. It's not in the top 10 in either Oregon or Washington (where Runtz is at No. 5). LCG is at No. 4 in Michigan (where SuperBoof Rules is) and No. 6 in Illinois. LCG is so popular – it's too the kind that critics love to hate. It's like the Macarena of modern grass.

More than 425 Leafly reviewers give Lemon Cherry Gelato an average rating of 4.6 out of 5.
As far as effects go, LCG is for everyone – some report sleeping on it, others report having to do housework.
“Very balanced hybrid that can complement any activity. But if you stay still, you might get stuck and get sleepy.”

So pretty much everyone should have a little LCG. We saw 10-point buds from Fig Farms in Oakland, California. We've seen usable LCG on the streets of New York. With a strain like this hype, you can expect quality to fluctuate and charlatans to abound.
In California, UpNorth certainly has a fire version, and we're hoping the Backpack Boyz version is a firearm too.
Don't miss it at Sherbinskis either.

Seattle gets Backpack Boyz LCG, and don't miss the Constellation Cannabis infused 2-packs or the 1 gram Oleum live resin.
In PhoenixMojave Cannabis Co's 1 gram LCG sprinkle or MFUSED 1 gram disposable should hit the spot.
Detroiter I'll want the 8ths and Hashholes from Pressure Pack LCG and the 8ths from Backpack Boyz.

Where to buy Lemon Cherry Gelato seeds and clones
Surprisingly energetic Red Eye – an LCG cross. (David Downs/Leafly)
According to Leafly freelancer Jimi Devine, writing in High Times in 2022, the Backpack Boyz started the LCG wave with a Gelato #33 Bagseed in 2016. Since then, it has also been considered a version of Runtz (Gelato x Z). So if you want to bring the LCG vibe to your garden, this is the way to go.
We feel LCG seeds and clones sell quickly online and in stores. Of note, this month Cookies Seed Bank is offering 12 packs of Lemon Cherry Sherb feminized seeds for $175. And Seed Junky Genetics has already sold out its Permanent Cherries (LCG x Kush Mints Bx1) x Permanent Marker drop. Raw Genetics created Lemon Cherry Pie. We would get the Tiki Madman LCG x Alien Sherbert for $85 and Lemon Cherry Fire F2. The LCG pack resale market includes the peer-to-peer weed genetics marketplace Strainly.
Ask your local dispensary or licensed nursery for additional fresh LCG genetics.
Has LCG won any trophies?
Will Barry Bonds hit a home run? Since LCG is essentially Gelato No. 33, it is one of the most successful varieties of all time. High Times made LCG their 2022 Strain of the Year. She placed 18th in indoor flower at the Emerlad Cup. Leafly made it a 4/20 strain this year. Look out for THC Design's Blue Cherry Gelato (Blue Nerdz x Lemon Cherry Gelato).

Sour diesel
AJ's Sour Diesel in Manhattan. (David Downs/Leafly)
Let's keep the New York hits rolling with Sour Diesel, especially AJ's Sour Diesel, debuting in New York this winter to all adults 21 and older. Since the '90s, the so-called Asshole Joe helped propel the Sour D craze that got East Coast sour fanatics excited. AJ has signed a deal with Flowerhouse NY to grow hundreds of pounds of AJ's Sour D for the masses, and batches are starting to hit stores. They sell out within a day, so stay tuned to the Flowerhouse Instagram to grab the next drop.
AJ's Sour D is grown in a greenhouse during the harsh New York summer and fall. It is large, slightly less dense than indoors, but sparkling, green and gassy with the characteristic diesel aroma. She seems like a '90s strain with a thinner body but undeniable New York potency. Often considered a sativa, AJ agrees that it is more of a hybrid with roots in Chem and Skunk. Either way, you can get a fat fry and enjoy subway pizza, sightseeing, and New Year's Eve craziness – all legal and as it should be.
Gas face
Torus gas surface. Hybrid sativa. Gassy! (David Downs/Leafly)
Avoid crowd-pleasers like LCG and dive into the offensive craziness with Gas Face – Face Mints x (Biscotti x SherbBx) from Seed Junky Genetics. The key here comes from the Face-Off OG in Face Mints. These stunning genes pass on to the offspring, where they deliver the 91 octane potency required for a Seed Junky strain. The Mints, the Biscotti and the Sherb are all there to give the smoke sophisticated mint, biscuit and creamy berry notes. Get blasted like a Space-X rocket. “Not usually a morning person, but smoking changes all that,” says one reviewer. Gasface!
Blue lobster

Pray for a Christmas miracle. Grower Umma Sonoma's first batch of three pounds of Blue Lobster sold out in one day in Greenwolf, LA. Maine's winning combination of Eye Candy x Apples & Bananas – the so-called Blue Lobster – has made its way west for a Los Angeles debut thanks to a collaboration between Maine Trees and Chris Lynch of Cipher Genetics, formerly Compound Genetics. A blue lobster is a rare, beautiful crustacean found on the East Coast. Here the term is applied to the Compound Genetics strain “Facade” – the stunningly beautiful Eye Candy hybrid with its deep purple foliage, large, shimmering buds and white trichome covering.
We get grape, blueberry and savory spice from this Blue Lobster – a three-time 2023 East Coast Zalympix Award winner that took 1st place in the Best Terps, Gassiest Flower and 2nd place in the “Best Overall” category won. The indica hybrid will leave you sluggish and hungry at Christmas dinner, so hide the cheese plate. The next batch will arrive in January and will weigh 10 pounds. In the meantime, stock up on all the eye-candy crosses, including Facade and Pave.
And that is Leafly Highlight! Have fun with the LCG. Don't miss Sour D and Gas Face and pray you find Blue Lobster.
