Dating app users are more likely to suffer from these conditions, study finds

Despite the fact that dating apps are incredibly popular, we’re still fascinated by them and what they say about us. A new study shows that dating app users are more likely to suffer from various ailments, including depression and hypersexuality.

The study, published in Sexes magazine, suggests some people use dating apps to help them cope with mental illness.

The researchers thought that depression and hypersexuality would lend themselves to dating app users. After conducting the study, they found that their theory was pretty solid. “A lot of evidence shows that the formation of couple relationships is often related to the use of dating apps. Sexual behavior is also mediated through the use of these technological tools. Therefore, psychological research is called upon to study this contemporary phenomenon,” said Giacomo Ciocca, the author of the study.

The study was conducted in Italy, with researchers collecting responses from 1,000 people through an online platform. The participants were between 18 and 60 years old and had no diagnosed serious mental illness. They answered questions about their life and sex life, explaining the status of their relationship, their sexual orientation, and whether or not they used dating apps. They also completed tests that tested for depression and hypersexual behavior.

Of the 12% of respondents who reported using dating apps, the researchers found that compared to those who did not use dating apps, these people were more likely to have casual dates and were more likely to be hypersexual. They also had higher scores for depression and displayed more moderate to severe symptoms than people who didn’t use dating apps.

“A lot of evidence shows that the formation of couple relationships is often related to the use of dating apps. Sexual behavior is also mediated through the use of these technological tools. Therefore, psychological research is called upon to examine this contemporary phenomenon,” Ciocca told Psypost.

While the results are interesting, they aren’t all that surprising. People on dating apps are likely to be younger and more likely to seek romantic and sexual connections than those who don’t use those apps or are involved in relationships. Dating app users are also active online and are subject to pressures from social media, which are known to affect mental health.
