Dating app says there are more dates if you care
According to data from OKCupid, agreeing with global warming is a major factor behind swiping right. In an interview with Earther, the dating site reports that there has been a 240 percent increase in words containing all sorts of environmental issues, from people like “Greta Thunberg” to terms like “recycling” and “global warming.”
A surprisingly large percentage of OKCupid users seem to care about the state of the environment. Almost all of them, 97%, believe climate change is real and 82% of them say it’s worth worrying about.
OKCupid contributors found that global warming was affecting people’s dating habits so much they tweeted about it. Of course it went viral.

“Since your match percentage with someone shows how compatible the two of you are, if you’re a climate activist and they think climate change is fake news, your match percentage will go down,” said Michael Kaye, global communications manager at OKCupid.

OKCupid differs from Tinder, Bumble, and other dating sites in that it provides you with matches based on answers to a quiz you take when you sign up. This is the method of providing pairings, and it has its pros and cons.

This isn’t the first time that current affairs have influenced people’s preferences for dating apps. Last December, Tinder published a list of the most discussed topics on its app. Their results show that millennials have been talking about travel a lot in recent years. Since the dating app is now largely Gen Z, politics and personal issues are among the most discussed topics.
A few years ago, your politics — one of the most important factors in your stance on global warming — wasn’t that important to your dating prospects. Nowadays they are almost all that matters. While there are the odd viral tweet here and there detailing one person’s personal experience of dating a Trump supporter, stories of this nature are limited. Most of us have dinner with people we don’t want to murder.
