Crazy comparisons of lotteries to the marijuana industry

People are starting to make pit stops to collect their lottery tickets. The “pot” is huge and people are willing to throw in a few more bucks to dream. The lines are long and the morning shows ask, “What would you do if you won?” A hunt for the winner ensues, and the winner tells his friends and family that he just wants to do well.

Lotteries have a long history. It started in ancient Rome and was used in Renaissance Europe to raise money for churches and other government projects. They gained acceptance in the US with a promise to help fund education. Marijuana dates were used before lotteries as it was (and still is) used as a medicine for pain and inflammation.

Revenue of state lotteries in the United States reached about $107.92 billion in 2021. A Powerball lottery set records with a whopping $1.6 billion. The industry is more than four times the size of the 2021 marijuana market, which was worth about $22 billion. These two branches help you to sit back, dream and relax.

There are lotteries in 45 states, with Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah not participating. For cannabis, there are recreational activities in 23 states and recreational activities in 40 states. Idaho, Nebraska, Indiana, Kansas and Tennessee have all banned legal marijuana. Interestingly, there is no crossover.

Gallup polls have found that state lotteries are the most popular form of gambling in the United States. About half of those surveyed said they had bought a lottery ticket in the last 12 months. It is affordable, only costing $1 to $2 per ticket. About 66% of the population plays the lottery at least once a year. Almost 90% of the population believe marijuana should be legal, and about 18% of the population use marijuana at least once a year.

Convenience store chain Circle K is a leader in both cannabis and lotteries. They have set up a structure where people can buy marijuana products as well as cigarettes and snacks at gas stations. Now, they announced that they are partnering with Jackpocket, a third-party app that provides a secure way to order official state lottery tickets and offers lottery players exclusive perks.

In both cases, state governments are the big winners. In lotteries, they take about a third of every lottery jackpot. In states where marijuana is completely legal, liquor tax revenues are said to be generated even though fewer products are sold.
