College students love weed, I repeat, college students love weed!
A federal survey revealed the alarming rate at which college students are consuming marijuana products through various delivery methods, the most famous of which is smoking.
Students at various colleges across the United States have always smoked weed, but the numbers recorded during the pandemic and this year put the rate of cannabis use in colleges and universities at an all-time high.
According to the poll released on Wednesday, the newly enacted laws and COVID-19-related ban regulations have led US college and university students to make marijuana smoking habit.
Collected statistics
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is the federal government’s agency for compiling information on substance use.
Every year the agency conducts a survey entitled “Monitoring the Future. The first of its kind was conducted in 1989 and was aimed at college students and young adults between the ages of 19 and 22. The survey is conducted at the University of Michigan’s Institute of Social Research at Ann Arbor.
The agency surveyed 1,550 college students, and the results of the survey found that 44 percent of those students were using marijuana in 2020. In 2015 it was only 37 percent.
The agency also surveyed college-aged young adults who were not admitted to colleges and found that the same percentage of young adults used cannabis in 2020 and 2019. One wonders why young adults in college smoke more than their colleagues who are out of school.
Reason for the high statistics
There are several reasons college students smoke cannabis in their various schools across the country.
Some of these reasons are good and some are bad.
The government has officially blamed the lockdown and newly introduced cannabis policies in various states for the increasing number of cannabis smokers in colleges.
While these reasons can be a percentage of the reasons, here are some other possible reasons that also play a role in why college students smoke their cannabis.
Peer pressure
A person’s college years are a vulnerable transition period. Young adults, especially young college students, are always pressured to do things they normally wouldn’t do just to fit in a new environment.
As a newcomer or naive student looking to make new friendships and social networks, it is easy to just get carried away with finding the personal identity that you think will suit you.
Nowadays the pressure does not come directly from friends and peers, but from the normalization of substance use within a social group. This is not limited to social groups that are united at school, but can also be done from home. If an adult in college comes from a family where older members smoke weed, there is a high chance that students were induced to light a stick themselves.
One article listed “pop culture” as a source of peer pressure. Portraying main and minor characters as habitual cannabis users helps normalize marijuana in schools.
Misinformation
Quite a few of these students believe that marijuana is harmless and, unlike tobacco and other banned substances, has no harmful long-term effects. Marijuana has its pros and cons. The most serious disadvantage is that it could develop into an addiction disease. At the rate at which students are using these drugs, the country could have an addiction epidemic among young adults in a few years.
To make things easier
Some college students suffer from mental illnesses such as anxiety and mood disorders such as stress, depression, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, etc. According to reports, these students self-manage their ailments by using cannabis. That way they get relief.
Studies show that these young adults are at risk of more serious mental illness as they age. Other effective treatments can be tried for mental health problems in college students.
Other
These young people use cannabis to make themselves feel good after a busy class or a boring day. They also use the drug to get deeper insight into a situation or to get away from their current problems or frustrations.
College students are not allowed to quit smoking anytime soon
In 2020, tallys were used to monitor daily cannabis use. From the data obtained, it was found that the trend towards cannabis use among college students was increasing.
8 percent of college students surveyed said they would use cannabis daily in 2020, an increase from the 4 percent of college students surveyed who said the same thing in 2015.
A survey was also organized for young adults, not in schools, the most recent data from this survey are identical to those for the past three years. The total percentage of people in the group who reported using cannabis every day or almost every day was 13 percent.
Nora Volkow, director of NIDA, said in a statement that the pandemic has changed the way college students interact. She believes college students smoked cannabis in an attempt to improve the way they now interact with one another. She also noted that more states have joined the recreational legislature, 17 states now allowing adult cannabis sales, and more states are joining.
Volkow did not want to say whether the current trends can still be observed after the pandemic. She just mentioned that NIDA will be investigating the high level of cannabis use among college students. In their opinion, this research is very critical and would determine the impact of this trend over time.
More smoking, less vaping
In 2020, many college students stopped vaping cannabis and started smoking.
During the data collection, only 12 percent of college students reported having vaped cannabis in the past 30 days, while 14 percent of young adults who did not attend school claimed to have vaped cannabis at the same time.
diploma
In order for effective interventions to be implemented to control excessive cannabis use in colleges, NIDA needs to find out the motivation behind this trend. The age of the students corresponds to the heyday when lifelong habits are formed.
