The California cannabis market is about to be lit with a new buzzword – clean. Yes, the clean buzz has made its way onto the cannabis scene. From clean beauty products to clean cleaning products, the era of clean weed is here. From the looks of it, cannabis operators in the Golden State are milking this new marketing ploy until they can’t anymore.

What is clean weed?

Clean Weed Is a term used to generalize cannabis plants that are grown as nearly organically as possible and with minimal use of pesticides. These products are made using eco-friendly farming methods. Although the level of “cleanliness” depends on the manufacturer, most clean products are made with the least amount of chemicals.

In California, a cannabis product is certified as “clean” if it is tested below state-mandated levels for various heavy metals, mycotoxins, and pesticides, despite having been grown with some chemicals. Products that test higher are considered “unsafe, unfit or unhealthy” for human consumption.

The same way that some organic and non-organic fruits and vegetables are indistinguishable on a shelf describes the future of cannabis sales in California. Clean products will find their way onto the shelves of legitimate pharmacies and appear more or less producing effects similar to regular products. However, the concept for cannabis concentrates is much more complicated.

Clean cannabis concentrates

The viscous, honey-like oils that fill vaporizer cartridges are made by separating the cannabinoids from the plant materials. This extraction process uses chemical solvents such as carbon dioxide, ethanol or butane. When the separation is complete, the chemical solvent is removed and the pressurization process follows. This is followed by resin (the sticky end product). Once the process is complete, as with cannabis flower, third-party testing is performed to determine the amount of chemicals remaining. California cannabis regulations allow up to 5,000 ppm butane in the resin; beyond that, the product is unsuitable.

The 25-year-old Dr. Peter Grinspoon described the whole concept of clean weed using an in-store analogy of organic and inorganic fruit. The Boston-based medicinal cannabis expert and board member of Doctors for Cannabis Regulation explained that a unit of fruit contains pesticides and chemicals. However, these chemicals are only present in a quantity that cannot harm us. He further explained that organic fruit was presented with a higher quality. Whether clean weed is safer than regular cannabis products has yet to be proven through clinical studies and trials.

California’s clean weed boom

The clean weed era has existed in the Golden State for over two years. The first was created in 2019; Two years ago, adult cannabis was legalized. At the same time, Nathan Cozzolino, co-founder of Rose Los Angeles, whose company makes Turkish Delight-style edibles using floral rosin, explained some time ago that his brand has also noticed the apparent shift in consumer preferences.

He explained that when the brand launched in 2018, only Rose and one other brand made solvent-free edibles. He noted that the general opinion at the time was that floral rosin was not scalable in the long run. He said he got a lot of negative comments like “using flower rosin is ridiculous, it’s a waste of smokeable bud, it’s not cost effective”… Fast forward to late 2019 and early 2020, almost every brand has switched production to primarily solvent-free concentrates and edibles.

Although clean weed is currently mostly found in California, some legal dispensaries in other states also carry it. It’s important to note that these products are not labeled as “clean weed.”
